As a matter of fact, there was a proper coordinated militia attack on Mali some months ago. I’m talking proper attacks from different corners from over 12,000 militants, which ended up costing the life of their defense minister.

Do you know how incredible that number is?? Do you know how difficult it is to even raise, camp and train 1,000 men???

There’s something about Nigeria that seems to make people abandon the manners and discipline they display elsewhere. The last time I visited, I witnessed something that left me genuinely shocked.

My flight to the UK was uneventful, but the connecting flight from the UK to Nigeria was a completely different experience. Many of the passengers had traveled from different parts of the world and connected through the UK, yet the moment they were headed to Nigeria, basic courtesy seemed to disappear.

When we arrived at Murtala Muhammed Airport, there was a queue because part of the airport was under construction and passengers were being directed through a smaller exit. Instead of waiting their turn, some people became impatient and started climbing over barricades to squeeze through the gate. Men and women who had just arrived from countries where they would never attempt such behavior suddenly began jumping the line, pushing past others, and forcing their way through.

At one point, someone stepped on me and kept moving without saying a word. When I called his attention to it, he turned, looked me up and down as if I was the one being unreasonable for expecting basic courtesy, and walked away without apologizing.

The whole experience was chaotic. It felt as though everyone believed they had to display some form of “gra gra” just to leave the airport. What struck me most was that these same people would never behave this way at Heathrow or any other major international airport.

Experiences like this make me wonder why years of exposure to more orderly systems often fail to translate into better standards back home. Many people spend decades in highly organized societies, yet return to recreate the same habits and environments they once complained about.
