Ben McCollum shares what it feels like to be around first-place people and a first-place culture.
"I went to Northwest Missouri State, and my first practice with Steve Tapmeyer - best coach I've ever been around - I sat there and I'm like, 'This is what first place feels like. This is what a first-place culture feels like. This is what first-place people feel like.'"
That was the wake-up call. He realized what first-place people have:
"They've got an extreme work ethic. They've got an edge to 'em that other people don't - a competitive spirit."
Then he quoted John Thompson:
"You can tame a fool a lot quicker than you can resurrect a corpse...We want guys with a little edge to 'em."
You can coach skills, but you can't coach competitive spirit. You don't want to consistently coach their effort and attitude.
The last thing they look for: Energy givers.
"Over the years, we found that guys that are moody don't make it in our program."
"If you're moody, if you have low energy, if you suck the life out of the building - you don't make it."
Talent isn't enough. Your energy matters. Your attitude matters.
Successful people have a competitive edge, they bring energy, and they look to consistently get better.
They raise the standard through what they do.

@Coach_DeMarco Seems crazy but at the middle school level now and I will always do the Pacer (beep test) during tryouts. If we don’t have a huge number I’ll make them dribble a ball while doing it. It shows effort/ base level of conditioning and creates easy data if/when needed.
@pntrack Thank you for the response. I agree you can’t coach 70 with the same detail and attention as you can 35. After having been a High School coach this is a good chance to help feed the High School as many kids as we can. It’s not perfect but it is fun.
Congrats to the Lainey Berryhill of Laramie for setting a new 4A Class and Overall State Record in the Girls 400 Meter Run with a time of 57.01 at the 2025 WHSAA 4A Girls State Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Amazing moment in the final seconds of the Eisenhower-Northwestern girls game as the Wildcats call a timeout to honor official Bernie Mackowski. Tonight was his last varsity game in 51 years of officiating! @PIAASports #thankyouofficials
Feels like a good time to remind folks of what bad officiating in a playoff game actually looks like.
The Chiefs forced a sack fumble and recovered it, only for the turnover to be negated because of what was deemed "forward progress."
KC lost and the ref retired.
Terrible.
@CoachHackGO Great game.
So what do you have to do for a score? One foot over baseline? I play the same game and have catching with at least one foot in the key being a “touchdown”. Also fun to play with a heavier ball or slightly water filled ball.
We ran a 3rd/4th grade fast break league. A continuous 4v3 and 3v2 game with restrictions. 4 10 min quarters, no reaching, no guarding past 3 point line. Limited stoppages. Kids and parents loved it. Definition of DEVELOPMENT. #youthbasketball@transformbball@JohnCarrier42
