Awdal is the closest region in the country to the Bab el Mandeb Strait and would put an end to the separatists' obsession with portraying themselves as the gatekeepers of a strategic maritime corridor.

Djibouti, which has finally realized that separatism poses a threat to its own security, should work with the Federal Government of Somalia to help establish the state and put an end to the pointless dispute among the people of the region, allowing Awdal to finally take its rightful place in Somali politics instead of having its voice overshadowed by Hargeisa.

Once that is achieved, the next step should be to bring in joint Saudi and Turkish investment to transform the historic Port of Zeila into one of the most important trade hubs in the Horn of Africa.
