Trades are *much* easier to get into vs. top-tier publications if you have relevant news.
*And* will make it easier to get into top-tier publications later.
(Think about it like building your PR resume so you can land bigger and bigger placements)
@EllenYChang@PRisUs@PRcarly@EllenYChang Hi there, so I tried your tip of locating a nearby tech conference and pitching to their journalist but the soonest one was after the date. Also suggested a zoom call. We didn't get any prospects but thanks anyways!
With shrinking newsrooms, are journalist and reporters still interested in desk sides? Currently pitching a technology client #mediarelations@PRisUs@PRcarly curious to hear your thoughts!
The most underrated business hack: appreciation.
Tell employees you’re grateful to have them.
Tell clients you’re grateful for their business.
Tell reporters you’re grateful they feature your clients.
It helps business.
But it’s the ensuing smiles that make life brighter.
@StroteBook Are there laws that protect freelancers? I just worked on a pricy project and the contractor won’t respond to my emails. Sending invoice today but not sure if they will pay
If your PR agency isn’t earning you media when you’ve got nothing to announce, that’s dead time on your retainer.
PR agencies already get a bad rep for:
- Charging multiple five figures.
- While assigning junior staff to your account.
- And waiting around for you to ideate instead of being proactive.
Unacceptable.
*Especially* when you have people like Richard Branson saying:
“Publicity is absolutely critical. A good PR story is infinitely more effective than a front page ad.”
As the former founder of an acquired startup, I know every dollar counts.
Which is why we’ll develop newsworthy pitches for our clients, day in and day out.
Examples:
→ Coined a newsworthy phrase for a client helping distributed teams work better.
→ Invited a “dirty windshield” artist to demonstrate the efficacy of a client’s cleaning products at a trade show.
→ Ideated and implemented a loneliness helpline for a client addressing the loneliness epidemic.
Bottom line:
DO listen to Bill Gates’ advice: “If I was down to my last dollar, I would spend it on public relations.”
DO NOT hire a PR agency that will put you on a large retainer, deliver zero ROI, and claim it’s because there’s “nothing newsworthy” going on.
Thank you for attending my angry TED talk.
Founders: journalists are neither your friends nor your enemies.
They’re truth-seekers with a code of ethics who work hard to convey meaningful and accurate information to the public.
