Today, July 1st, is the Feast of the Precious Blood, our parish's patronal feastday. A High Mass will be offered at 7 p.m., celebrating the seventh anniversary of the establishment of our parish in 2019.

Monthly Mediation
During this month of November, when we remember with special concern the Holy Souls in Purgatory, let us look as always to the doctrine of St. Thomas Aquinas. The Angelic Doctor reminds us of the words of 2 Maccabees 12:46: "It is…a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins." Sacred Scripture has made it clear: we can aid the souls of the departed by our prayers and good works for them.

According to St. Augustine, Holy Mother Church clearly approves of the custom of remembering the dead in the prayers of the Holy Mass. The custom of praying for the dead was established by the Apostles themselves, according to St. John Damascene: "Realizing the nature of the Mysteries, the disciples of the Saviour and His holy apostles sanctioned a commemoration of those who had died in the faith being made in the awe-inspiring and life-giving Mysteries." The rite of praying for the dead dates to the Early Church, according to Dionysius the Areopagite.

The doctrine of the Communion of the Saints urges us to examine our fraternal charity. Charity, which is the bond uniting the members of the Church, extends not only to the living, but also to the dead who die in a state of friendship with God. Charity, the love of God above all things and our neighbor for God’s sake, is the life of the soul. As the soul is immortal, so is charity according to St. Paul: "Charity never falleth away" (1 Corinthians 13:8).

Moreover, the dead live in the memory of the living. The suffrages, or prayers and good works, of the living therefore profit the dead in two ways, just as they profit the living. They aid the dead by the bond of charity, and on account of the intention being directed to them. They help to lessen the intensity of the Purgatorial flames enveloping the Holy Souls, thus easing the pains of their purification.

We so often look to our neighbors here on earth as the potential beneficiaries of our charity. In our zeal to do good to the living, let us not forget these Holy Souls, who are now in their hour of greatest need. May our charity towards our beloved departed be a worthy preparation for the Season of Advent and the coming of the Infant King!

On Saturday, August 23, the Institute of Christ the King apostolates from Detroit (@StJosephShrineD), Columbus (@StLeoOratory), Chicago, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh (@mpboj_pgh) gathered as pilgrims to seek the help and intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Consoler of Afflicted, at the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, OH.

United in prayer, our Institute family enjoyed a Rosary Walk on the beautiful grounds, had the opportunity to receive the sacrament of penance, assisted at a Solemn High Mass at the main altar of the Basilica followed by the consecration of the Institute to Mary, learned about the rich history of the Shrine, and gathered for lunch and fellowship to conclude a truly glorious Saturday.
