From 2009 to 2019 there was zero correlation between per student spending and test scores.

And despite increased funding, test scores have now declined from pre-COVID years.

Mississippi now matches or beats states spending more than twice as much per pupil in both math and reading.

Because public schools have no incentive to spend money efficiently.

They’re taxpayer funded monopolies.

When they fail, they don’t shut down like normal businesses, they get bigger budgets instead.

The incentive structure rewards failure.
So they will keep failing to get more funding.

If you actually want test scores to improve relative to spending, cut the funding.

The Wisconsin Idea is a progressive concept that the experts at the University of Wisconsin–Madison should apply their expertise to benefit the people of Wisconsin (good idea) but also to help dictate and manage society (bad idea).

It stems from progressivism’s greatest weakness, its religious faith in expertise rather than principles.

From this zealous adherence to expertise, early progressives allowed the founder of the Wisconsin Idea, Charles Van Hise, to lead them down the tragic and evil road of eugenics.

In 1910, the progressive icon Van Hise wrote, “Human defectives should no longer be allowed to propagate the race.”

The Wisconsin Idea’s influence contributed to Wisconsin’s 1913 Eugenics laws, signed by Progressive Governor Francis McGovern.

These laws:

• Authorized involuntary sterilization of inmates in mental institutions and penal facilities deemed “defective.”

• Required medical certificates for marriage licenses, barring or restricting unions involving those labeled “epileptic, insane, or idiotic,” or carrying venereal disease (often framed in eugenic terms as degeneracy linked to poverty, immigrants, or marginalized groups).

Sterilizations began around 1915.

Philosophies based on the founding principles of America - Free Speech, equality, dignity, property rights, individual liberty, etc… don’t allow for crackpot evils like Eugenics.

Progressivism’s faith in expertise over principle does.

This has always been the flaw of progressivism.

This is why it remains dangerous today.

And the Wisconsin Idea has never been about empowering the people.

It’s always been about empowering the experts.
