Hard to believe this, really. Apparently, zero grants for archaeology and bioanth projects were awarded by the NSF in 2026. The USA's long-standing leading position in these fields won't survive many years of no NSF research grants.

Let me transport you back 252 years to the summer of 1774. Queen Marie Antoinette had just been gifted the Petit Trianon estate at Versailles, where she built her private retreat, including the Temple of Love seen in this Autochrome photo by Jules Gervaise-Courtellemont. This evocative scene from history was recreated in the summer of 1925, and I have cleaned this Autochrome which was taken in colour 101 years ago using an early colour glass plate process. It isn't colourised.
Let me say the obvious here: if you normally vote by mail this may be the year to go in person to cast your ballot. Especially if you live in a state where a crucial seat is up for grabs.
SAMSON Web is live: create, predict, render, and share molecular systems directly in your browser!
Today, we are incredibly proud to introduce SAMSON Web: a browser-based molecular design environment.
No installation.
No plugin.
No account required.
Open SAMSON Web, create or import a molecular system, work on it directly in the browser, and share it.
Not a screenshot.
Not a video.
A real interactive 3D molecular document.
With the full context.
With SAMSON Web, you can start in many ways:
• open molecular files from your device
• import and export common formats such as PDB, MOL2, and more
• fetch structures from databases
• predict structures (currently with AlphaFold 2, Boltz-2, and Chai-1x)
• build from atoms, fragments, and assets
• import cloud job results
And once your system is in the browser, you can work on it: select, measure, prepare, align, minimize, annotate, edit, create a new version, and share again.
Because one of the most important parts of SAMSON Web is sharing interactive documents.
Scientific communication still relies too much on molecular images or movies.
But molecular systems are three-dimensional. And they have context, annotations, associated data, versions, and intent.
With SAMSON Web, you can share an interactive molecular document that preserves context in seconds.
A collaborator, student, reviewer, customer, or colleague can open it in the browser, rotate it, zoom in, inspect annotations, associated logs and data, understand the model directly, and even edit their own copy. Remote collaborators, even during a Zoom or Teams session, can now explore designs as they want, edit, and send you back their changes.
SAMSON Web also helps you create high-quality visuals directly in the browser:
• advanced rendering effects
• custom backgrounds
• 3D skyboxes
• path tracing
• advanced materials
• snapshots and render-ready scenes
Modern molecular design produces much more than coordinates: prediction results, alignments, tables, metadata, trajectories, reports, annotations, and intermediate files.
SAMSON documents preserve it all, and SAMSON Web also includes a Data Explorer to explore and edit rich scientific data next to molecular structures.
The goal is to make molecular documents richer and more useful: scientific workspaces where structure, data, calculations, and interpretation live together.
You start locally by default (files you open stay on your device unless you choose to share them or use cloud features).
You do not need an account to create and share.
Creating an account unlocks versioned documents and history, permission controls, and access to your data from anywhere.
SAMSON Web is live. You can start in seconds.

From the Navy SEAL officer who planned and executed the Bin Laden raid: “In recent months, President Trump, upon advice from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, has relieved or forced the retirement of some of the finest officers that have ever served this nation. I have personally worked with most of them in combat….And this week, in an egregious decision, the president forced General Chris Donahue to step down from his position in command of U.S. Army Europe. Donahue is without question one of the most brilliant officers I know. He is strategically focused, tactically aggressive, personally courageous, exceptionally thoughtful in his planning and execution, and compassionate with his troops. He has the respect of every man and woman who ever served with him—and you can put me at the top of that list.”
Holy moly, what a week! We are tired. We are excited. We are grateful.
We are tired: Since we formally launched an independent Capital Weather on Tuesday, after 18 years with The Washington Post, we’ve covered storms on three straight days, had two heat advisories, and reached 100 degrees in DC on Friday.
We are excited: With a brand new website at https://t.co/iJ1FwP5Wiv, a brand new Capital Weather app, and no paywall for our core forecasts and updates, we are already reaching so many of you with a combination of our human forecasts and convenient modern weather tools.
We are grateful: Many of you have already generously contributed to help us keep essential 24/7 DC-area weather coverage free for all. Your support is what makes this possible. We can’t thank you enough.
For those of you who didn’t have a chance during the week, we invite you to take a moment this weekend and check out the various ways you can support us. Options range from our “contribute what you’d like” Fan level, to monthly or annual Friend contributions, to our annual Founder level.
We love our Fans, Friends, and Founders all the same!

Your smart TV is taking screenshots of your screen every 15 seconds.
Not a guess. Not a theory.
A peer-reviewed study by researchers at UC Davis, UCL, and UC3M tested it.
Samsung TVs: every minute.
LG TVs: every 15 seconds.
Even when you're just using it as a monitor.
Here's how to turn it off for every brand:
We were told NIH funding cuts were about eliminating DEI.
But the data now shows grants are down across nearly every field of medicine: cancer, diabetes, mental health, brain disorders.
With the greatest cuts hitting Alzheimer’s research, down more than 50%.
Federal funding for US biomedical research is moribund.
Since October 1 2025, NIH is -80% in new grants and -70% in values (total dollars).
Labs are closing down and researchers are leaving science.
To what end?
James Van Der Beek spent the last year of his life fundraising for cancer treatment.
He auctioned off Dawson’s Creek memorabilia.
Costars launched Cameos to raise money for his care.
A serious diagnosis in the US can financially destroy you.
Universal healthcare saves lives.
The CIA just stopped publishing their World Factbook and took every page, including the archived copies of previous versions!
This sucks. It was public domain, so I recovered the 2020 edition (the last one published as a zip file) and shared it to GitHub https://t.co/OdhO5RLpMC
🐦⬛🍂If you'd like to support my writing and recuperation, then why not visit my little Etsy shop which has dozens of Shell County & Natural History posters for sale, Japanese prints and rare books - prices ranging from £15, with more items added every day! 🍂🐦⬛ https://t.co/8PAvw03cH2
