Award-winning health & science writer. Bylines: NYMag, WSJ, Vice, The Atlantic & more. Excellent at interpreting studies, terrible at self-promo. #Immigrant.
My new #longform story up on @TheCut. It's abt how ER wrkers are learning to identify & help trafficked people. How the ER is both a good place to do this & one of the hardest. And how trafficking can feel so removed from our lives but it's actually closer than we think. See🧵
This is such a loss. Writing oyster story for Hakai last yr was one of the best experiences a writer could have for a million reasons. Truly A+++ editors. Was just gearing up to pitch again. Gutted, hope someone comes to the rescue.
The bad news is out: Hakai Magazine is shutting down at the end of 2024. We’re incredibly sad, but our team is proud of the great work we’ve done these past 10 years. We have 5 more months of beautiful and unique coastal stories to come. More info here: https://t.co/iwp4DXTTEt
Over the moon to be this year’s health winner 🥹 I thought this story would never see the light of day so this recognition means so much. Thank you @ASJAhq@NYMag@jenortiznyc 🙏🏼
found out that my story on trafficking won a wee Award for Excellence in Health Care Journalism! Brb crying! TY to @AHCJ my lovely editor @jenortiznyc and ofc everyone who spoke to me for this piece🙏🏼❤️
My latest feature for @hakaimagazine about the conflicts between (mostly wealthy) residents and oyster farmers. Who gets to do what on the water and who gets to decide that. Does wealth always win?
Oyster farmers across the United States and parts of Canada are being confronted by a growing population of coastal residents who are upset about where farms are going up. 🦪

A beautiful, raw, emotional, must-watch film made by a fellow Pole. So proud of the courage of everyone, my people. Perfectly translated but listening to it and understanding in Polish made it even more special to me.
Nurse Melissa Graham spoke about Houston @MethodistHosp's efforts to identify and help human trafficking victims with a new tool that was launched throughout the hospital system last year. Very well-written article by @mpuniewska for @NYMag@TheCut.

Ofc, this story only scratches the surface, so much more to write! These efforts often start in the ER but so many nurses, docs, social workers, and more have put them in place in other areas of the hospital/healthcare. Thankful I got to write abt this piece of the work.
Thank you to Katherine from @HHSGov for context on the past & present efforts and survivors Kelli & Susy (& others I spoke with) for trusting me with your story and educating me and us all on what it's like to use the US healthcare system as a trafficked person.
