➡️ CA Monkeypox Cases Raise Concerns. But Health Officials Say the Risk Remains Low
- two Californians w/ mpox may be the first U.S. cases resulting from the local spread of Clade I
- no close contacts traveled abroad

This is concerning
2 Cases of more severe/lethal mpox Clade 1 virus in California picked up in hospitalized patients
Cases NOT linked to each other nor Travel
Previously, a mild Clade II version swept the US
This is the much worse Clade 1 virus

A more severe mpox strain is spreading — 2 people hospitalized in LA. This isn’t the same virus we faced before.
And it’s unfolding during a federal shutdown that’s sidelining CDC outbreak teams.
The first U.S. case of a more severe strain of mpox without any recent travel history has been identified in California.

I chose the subtitle to my book very carefully.
As the doctors I warned about enable an anti-vaxx crank as he attacks vaccines, I don't want to hear a peep from anyone who called me "hysterical" or faked a concern about my tone.
I just saw the threat years before you.
Four distinct #mpox outbreaks—clades 2A, 2B, 1A, and 1B—are posing significant challenges, with overlapping clades in regions like #Cameroon complicating testing and responses. Robust genomic surveillance and targeted public health measures are essential to address these complexities, emphasised @AfricaCDC DG Dr @JeanKaseya2.

.@WHO has listed the LC16m8 vaccine against #mpox for emergency use — the first vaccine listed for children over one year old in outbreak settings. This is a vital step in protecting vulnerable populations, especially children, as mpox continues to spread.
In the last two months, half of all suspected mpox cases in the #DRC were in children under the age of 12. The total number of suspected cases have crossed 40,000 this year, with 1,200 deaths reported.
The outbreaks in Burundi and Uganda are also expanding.
On Friday 22 November, I am reconvening the Emergency Committee on mpox to review the epidemiological situation and the ongoing response.
Today @CAPublicHealth confirmed the first known case of clade I mpox in the United States related to the outbreak in Central and Eastern Africa. CDC is awaiting the specimen for confirmation testing, assisting our state and local partners to understand more about this case and prevent mpox spread in the United States. ➡️ Monkeypox virus keeps getting better at spreading among humans
- Analysis of a clade Ia strain of the virus circulating in Central Africa shows genetic mutations indicative of sustained human-to-human spread

We talked to Yale School of Public Health epidemiologist Prof. @VogelsChantal about the science behind the current #mpox outbreak.

CDC issues Health Alert Network (HAN) Health Update for healthcare providers, public health authorities, and public on clade I mpox outbreaks in central and eastern Africa.

.@WHO will convene an emergency committee to advise it on whether to declare the ongoing large #mpox outbreak in Africa a public health emergency of international concern. Seems likely a PHEIC will be declared. https://t.co/jMKOBx0QAn
As a deadlier strain of #mpox spreads to multiple African countries, @WHO, @AfricaCDC, local governments and partners are further scaling up the response to interrupt disease transmission. But more funding and support for a comprehensive response are needed.
I am considering convening an International Health Regulations Emergency Committee to advise me on whether the outbreak of mpox should be declared a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).
Thank you @sciencecohen for spotlighting this important and urgent issue.

Really good info here:
Nonsexual transmission still happens with mpox (aka Monkey Pox) but has not been as common as transmission associated with sexual contact.
Mpox spread via nonsexual contact not common, new data show
