A chart showing 28 globular star clusters in order of distance from our Solar System.
The top half of the chart shows GCs out to 27,000 LY and the lower half those out to about twice that distance -- a somewhat crude yet neat confirmation that GCs are generally spread out in a region/halo surrounding the centre of our galaxy (~26,000 light years away).
The major exception is M54. This very distant and difficult to resolve GC is now considered to be the remnant core of the Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy which first collided with The Milky Way 7 billion years ago and likely triggered the formation of the Sun and hence life on Earth!

These Messier globulars were all imaged using short 5x30s exposures during a single Messier Marathon session on 8-9 March 2024. A monochrome image of Omega Centauri (NGC 5139) is included for comparison. A total of 88 Messier objects were imaged that night.
