A really good thread of a very powerful way of assessing student understanding quickly. Maths teachers love MWBs and I see them used all the time, but there are loads of ideas here for non-Maths uses as well.
A great explanation of a much maligned and underestimated teaching technique. I think staff are nervous to try it, but ones who do see a noticeable change in that key knowledge retention. MFL teachers have been using it for years, but it is slow to move over to other subjects.
@SaysMiss @JoeAmbroseGLT @joe__kirby Just realised that despite my flag waving and saying it's amazing - it's only for Android! Here is the link if you want to make a huge change to your phone life! https://t.co/CvPcX9XEb8
@JoeAmbroseGLT @SaysMiss@joe__kirby I might suggest minimalist phone app that slims down your phone to roughly that list of apps, so you don't have to change your SIM or have two phones
Always good to be reminded by @NiallAlcock of the great people we have in @BWTrust and the evidence informed approaches that lead to us using the best bets for our students. Adelle is now an AP at Brooke, using her experience to guide leaders to think deeply about their teaching
4 and 5 both referenced by Adelle Northern Head of Humanities at Brooke Weston Academy in her talk:
"A review of assessment in the KS3 History curriculum"
If teachers just learn a technique, they may have โroutine expertiseโ allowing them to perform it effectively under standard conditions. But to adapt and apply it in a different situation needs โadaptive expertiseโ: an understanding of why, when and how.

@adamboxer1 You would create better/more rounded scientists/historians/mathematicians etc I'm sure. Getting better results in terminal exams is more complex. This is why a rich KS3 curriculum experience, untainted by exams AOs, is so important to create rounded students
7 myths, Making Good Progress, Principled Assessment Design by @dylanwiliam are such good reads on this and different approaches, all of them really clarified my thinking on this
"Skills vs knowledge" is one of the most significant debates in education.
Yesterday, one of the creators of a flagship skills-based curriculum admitted it's not possible to teach skills without knowledge.
Hugely important for education globally.

Crossover with previous things that I've read, but as always @Inner_Drive put it succinctly for busy people. They also have labels for stuff you probably already do, rationalising conversations with colleagues when reflecting. I didn't call it 'pre-questions' before . . .
So you've got 40 mins of a dept meeting to deliver some training, what do you do?
How do you get the most out of the time for your whole team?
This is what I do: 1/14
As always, some clear thinking and common sense. Setting out the issues with assessment and how we can cover these through our curriculum and assessments do overcome short termism. The upper KSs should always refer to and refresh the learning of earlier KSs
You can't assess your way out of a curriculum problem.
Instead, we should surround assessments with supporting curriculums which promote long-term learning, & communicate the principles of effective learning and revision clearly to students.
