Great visit yesterday by Rob Jackson of US Great Hearts and Matt Post of UDallas. Highlight was discussing philosophy as a public endeavour with our Year 9 class where private definitions of mud, paper and love were (almost) clarified! @elss_freeschool@GreatHeartsAcad
This was a useful discussion - I realised education as a brilliant and intellectually distinctive idea for all children still needs defending. This previously self-evident idea has withered away in all of the far too evidence-based manifestos @elss_freeschool

Should students be involved in the debates around the General Election? What are the main parties saying about education in the General Election? Are the OFSTED reforms a positive development?

Donatello’s Judith has complicated discussion we have followed the argument from pulpit sculptures of massacred innocents to public statue of murdered Holofernes. @elss_freeschool
Did Pisano start the Renaissance? If he did, was it Nicola or Giovanni or Andrea? Our year 12 History students are trying to work this out at the V and A Cast Courts, themselves a stunning model of 19th century educational vision @elss_freeschool
ELSS school motto is to stand on the shoulders of giants - more than just a job! Enjoyed discussion - let’s carry on conversation and like Michelangelo release your inner hero from the rock - he will make you happy not sad! @BarryNSmith79@elss_freeschool@jo_facer@Trivium21c
Interesting...really good, good, good enough, going through the motions, in the room but little more, there are all manner of teachers. The romanticised (and v unrepresentative) image of the hero teacher saddens me. Huge & unreasonable expectation.
Maybe we are! Does this kind of big picture educational reform which never seems to happen still count as social justice in the identity era? And are the grammars actually teaching any grammar anyway?

Schools and social justice - useful revisit of themes in this already dated article - is the public understanding now even more framed via identity politics not academic expectation?

What if teachers are better than education professors at improving educational outcomes? Interesting. I DO have misgivings about teachers & research. I also know that pretty much every awful fad I’ve ever seen been sold as ‘science’ based. https://t.co/eBiWImM8ZN
Retweeted x 2 from RM because he opened up Columbia to ELSS pupils on NYC trips ❤️ and article repositions social justice and education: universality of curriculum v. particularity of the student @elss_freeschool@DeBalloonist@teach_well@StaufenbergJ

The question I asked here was whether specifically assessing and credentialising the teaching of character as moral virtue was really possible or desirable for good teaching - worth more thought! @elss_freeschool https://t.co/zpiVqGzvt6
Time for questions and discussion. The audience is posing insightful core questions about what it is the basis to define good, or virtue, or how we can measure virtue growth #CoreConference19

Good discussion yesterday with Rob Jackson @GreatHeartsAcad and Karen Bohlin of Montrose of the challenges facing education in US secondary schools - curriculum versus character/neuroscience? @elss_freeschool https://t.co/zpiVqGhUBy
Looking forward to this debate a lot just been speaking at a slightly less irreverent #CoreConference19 where focus is can virtue be taught @elss_freeschool
2nd Nov, 4pm, Barbican, me, @jo_facer, @Trivium21c and the @ELSS_freeschool posse chewing the cud. Join us. I promise to be irreverent & ‘dire tout haut ce que tout le monde pense tout bas’. Lots of tales from my colourful career 1997 to now!
Also leads on to another cracking session on what really makes a good teacher in today’s confused educational landscape straight after! @elss_freeschool

So this is a great topic! I'm speaking on a panel about "Schools: A new front for social justice?" for the Battle of Ideas festival @BarbicanCentre.
Invited by super interesting vice principal @mrmarktaylor13 from @elss_freeschool!
