Peering into the past: a prototype that revolutionized minimally invasive surgery.
More than half a century ago, Professor Harold Hopkins built a cystoscope prototype that, through his groundbreaking collaboration with Dr. med. h. c. Karl Storz, sparked a new era of endoscopic surgery. A pivotal piece of KARL STORZ history—and a name still instantly recognizable today: HOPKINS, engraved on every rigid scope.
This very prototype is preserved at the @HunterianLondon of The Royal College of Surgeons of England (@RCSnews), where Curator Alice Watkinson-Dean guided us through the story of an optical breakthrough that forever changed surgical practice. What began as a bold idea continues to shape patient care worldwide today.
A heartfelt thank you to the Hunterian Museum team for helping us bring this extraordinary chapter of medical history to life.

@KARLSTORZUK The significance of this partnership and what they achieved is vastly underestimated. Minimal access surgery and the improved therapeutic treatment of patients would not be where it is today without them. Phenomenal partnership.
#OnThisDay in 1964, company founder, Dr. Karl Storz wrote to Physicist, Prof. Harold Hopkins.
Together, they combined the Hopkins rod-lens with the Storz cold light source. One year later, the HOPKINS®️ rod lens system was launched, revolutionising endoscopy and urology.
To this day, KARL STORZ honours this collaboration by engraving HOPKINS®️ onto the optical block of every rigid scope produced.
Dr. Karl Storz and Prof. Harold Hopkins shared not only a ground-breaking professional collaboration but also a passion for healthcare. In fact, Prof. Hopkins delivered a speech at our 40th anniversary celebration in 1985. Next year, we look forward to celebrating our 80th anniversary, continuing the legacy of innovation and partnership.

@Ambu_Medical I think you’ll find it only referred to those hospitals who manually disinfect their endoscopes and in the UK the guidelines insist on automated processing not manual.
Our new Training & Technology Centre is open! Bringing customers and colleagues together in training and new technologies from KARL STORZ Endoscopy (UK) Ltd @KARLSTORZUK
