10 things sports taught me about life:
1. Confidence is a choice.
Want to be good at anything in life? Choose confidence.
2. The sun will come up tomorrow.
The "end of career performance" is a story around the fire pit in six weeks' time.
3. You are not as important as you think.
99.9% of people never saw that terrible performance and don't know who you are.
4. The power is in the team.
You barely move the needle on your own.
5. Your bus is smaller than you think.
The people truly on your bus are few and far between, cherish them.
6. Money buys peace of mind, not happiness.
Money is a tool, not an endless dopamine rush.
7. You have one superpower ~ You.
The quickest way to succeed is by embracing you.
8. Nerves are a part of it.
Accept it, embrace it, and be fully present.
9. Risk is relative.
Risk is a muscle, develop it.
10. Embrace the unknowns.
There will be no perfect time, situation, or place.
One time at a tournament, I found out my players invited girls to the hotel.
Texted them I was doing bedchecks (as I walked down the hall to their room).
They tried hiding the girls in a closet, which was dishonest (& we have an honesty policy) told them meet me in the lobby at 5:00am for a special workout in the parking lot.
Went to my room & turned off my alarm, went to sleep. The next morning I woke up after a great night’s sleep & came down to the lobby (around 9am) to find them still sitting down there.
Asked them how they slept? how was breakfast? They looked at me confused.
Finally one of them said, “Coach, weren’t we supposed to meet at 5am?”
I said, “Absolutely & I hope you all made it. But that’s the thing about trust, once it’s broken, you don’t know what to believe.”
As much as I wanted to have them doing bear crawls in the parking lot, or running til they puked, the look on their faces said they’d remember that forever. Never had a problem again.
Tough pill to swallow for a lot of teachers IMO. "Every test result, every disparity, and every piece of data that you can find will be much more influenced by inequality and poverty than by what the teacher actually does at the front of the classroom." https://t.co/i94Szj37w2
