🚨NEW: Washington, D.C. veteran fights to reclaim her home from a squatter while facing foreclosure as the tenant hasn’t paid rent since October and shows no sign of leaving

Veronica Hegens, 59, a Pentagon employee for more than 27 years who served through two wars, rented out the upstairs unit of her two-unit row home to help care for her 84-year-old father

Her tenant, Phillip Graham, had most of his $2,600 monthly rent covered by the DC Housing Authority and was expected to move out at the end of September 2025

Graham unexpectedly died a few weeks before his planned departure

Hegens then discovered his live-in girlfriend, Gwen Broadie, who had never signed a lease, was occupying the unit and refused to leave

The standoff is now before DC Superior Court

Broadie, granted a temporary restraining order allowing her to stay, told the court in October 2025, “I understand that I can’t stay for free. I just need a little time.”

Hegens has gone six months without rental income while the dispute continues
