New videos show that the Lithuanian Islamist convert Habib Mickevičius, who stabbed a man to death in Vilnius last month, was trying to convert people on the streets and was handing out hundreds of Qurans with written commentary in Lithuanian.

It’s believed that the Lithuanian Qurans had been donated to him by Turkey or Qatar, both states being hotbeds of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The murder and videos of Habib engaging in street Daʿwah (the act of proselytizing people to Islam) has started a debate in Lithuania about how foreign-funded Islamist radicals are taking over mosques in Lithuania from the country’s 700-year-old well-assimilated and fiercely patriotic Tatar community.

The split started in 2019 with conflicts in Kaunas and Vilnius between the Tatars and foreign-funded Islamists representing thousands of newly arrived Muslim labor migrants.

Turkey’s official state institution Diyanet started supplying imams to Kaunas and Vilnius in 2012, while the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency TIKA funded major restorations of Muslim sites in the country, including the extensive 2018–2019 renovation of the Kaunas Mosque.

In March 2019, these foreign-funded non-Tatar Islamists, created the Council of Muslim Religious Communities (The Second Muftiate) was registered.

It quickly gained control of key sites, including the Kaunas Mosque.

The traditional Tatars (grouped in an organization known as The First Muftiate) were effectively sidelined as leadership and attendance shifted toward the new a Muslim labor migrants and Lithuanian converts.

In 2019, the City of Vilnius allocated land in Liepkalnis for a new mosque, a project pushed by the emerging second Muftiate and largely rejected by traditional Tatars.

They started lobbying against the new mosque construction and the project was halted.

The new video of the Islamist killer Habib Mickevičius handing out hundreds of Qurans with written Lithuanian commentary has many Lithuanians asking the question of why the Lithuanian authorities have allowed tens of thousands of labor migrants move to the country over the past decade.

They also wonder why the authorities have allowed Turkish and Qatari-backed Muslim Brotherhood-allied organizations to take control of the local mosques, pushing out the local Tatar community which has loyally served in the Lithuanian military in every war the country has fought over the past 600 years.
