Today, we are buying fuel at over 1,300 Naira, and we have spent more on this so-called energy security expense in two years than in years of Buhari paying subsidies.

This government has lost it again.

This happened yesterday and every Nigerian needs to understand exactly what it means.

Dangote Refinery officially transitioned to dollar-denominated pricing effective July 13, 2026. Petrol now sells at $0.779 per litre through the gantry, diesel at $1.087 per litre, and aviation fuel at $0.942 per litre. All previously issued naira invoices have been declared invalid.

This is the honest explanation of why this happened.

NNPCL has been supplying Dangote with a growing volume of crude oil under dollar-denominated arrangements rather than naira. The resulting currency mismatch between what the refinery pays to procure crude and what it receives from selling refined products created significant foreign exchange exposure that became unsustainable.

In plain English, Dangote was buying crude in dollars but selling petrol in naira. With the naira volatile and crude prices fluctuating globally, he was absorbing exchange rate losses on every transaction. That is not a business model any private investor can sustain indefinitely.

Now here is what this means for ordinary Nigerians.

The new pricing structure means fuel costs will now depend directly on the prevailing naira to dollar exchange rate. If the naira appreciates, marketers pay fewer naira per litre. If the naira depreciates, the naira cost of every litre automatically rises. Fuel pricing could become more dynamic with marketers adjusting prices more frequently in line with foreign exchange movements.

The immediate concern is clear. If the naira weakens, petrol prices go up. Your pump price is now permanently tied to the CBN’s ability to defend the exchange rate.

Economists warn that increased demand for dollars by fuel marketers could put additional pressure on Nigeria’s foreign exchange market, potentially weakening the naira further if foreign currency supply fails to keep pace.

The naira-for-crude policy that helped stabilise fuel prices is now effectively dead at the Dangote level. The government allowed the dollar-denominated crude supply arrangement to grow without addressing the mismatch, and Dangote eventually did what any rational business would do. He protected his revenue.

The lesson here is not about Dangote. He built a private business and he has every right to price it in whatever currency makes commercial sense. The lesson is about Nigeria’s government, which celebrated the naira-for-crude initiative as a major policy win in 2024 without building a framework resilient enough to sustain it when crude supply conditions changed.

Your fuel price is no longer just a refinery decision. It is now a foreign exchange decision. So I will tell Nigerians to watch the naira closely.
