Joe Mauer is one of my favorite players so this is no knock on him. He’s a HOFer.

But I can’t help but wonder what the narrative would have been on my Dads career if he retired early like Mauer.

Instead, he battled through 4 seasons of awful injuries (some life threatening) which hurt his WAR and ultimately leaves all voters with the narrative that he had an unexplainable steep decline his last 4 seasons.

If he retired 4 years earlier when his injuries started his career WAR would have been slightly higher and career narrative would be different.

Moral of the story? Who cares about your career WAR, fighting through the injuries is the way to go because thats what legends do.
