President Dallin H. Oaks’ (@OaksDallinH) remarks at the National Cathedral offer a message every American would benefit from listening to.
"As a practical basis for unity, all of us should accept the reality that we are fellow citizens who need each other. This requires all of us to obey some laws we dislike and to live peacefully with some persons whose values differ from our own. We should make every effort to understand the experiences and concerns of others, especially when they differ from our own. We should be especially careful not to seek total dominance for all of our own positions."
The prophet concluded by praying "that we will all seek to be peacemakers."
Watch his timely and profound message on the eve of Constitution Day in the United States:
@AmesStraight We will never forget. And we must help the younger generations understand what happened and what we can do to remember that we are all one family. Hate only breeds hate.
@nicoraytruth What a beautiful message about the personal impact of the atonement. We are truly never alone. Everything changes when we know that. When we know He will cover us as the waves crash over us, again and again. It is real. Our Savior is our truest friend- and our true Redeemer.
Real men are accountable for their actions, acknowledge their mistakes, apologize, and try to set things right. I met some real men recently, members of my home ward I want to tell you about.
Recently, my wife Ruth substituted as a teacher in a youth Sunday School class. The students were 12- and 13-year-old young men and young women. Some of the young men were acting like, well, 12- and 13-year-old young men. They were a bit casual and less than engaged than ideal in the lesson about Job. Ruth had given the students a handout with some scriptures to read. Of course, paper airplanes were made of the handouts (is anyone surprised?). Ruth who is an excellent and adaptable teacher collected the airplanes, continued with the lesson, and thought no more about it.
On the following Thursday evening, we had a knock on our door. Three of the young men were on the porch. They handed Ruth a letter that read:
Dear Sister Renlund,
We want to apologize for our behavior in Sunday School. We meant no disrespect even though our actions said otherwise. We failed to meet our duty as Deacons and we are sorry. We have learned from our mistake and better learned what our Aaronic Priesthood duty is.
We have made a bouquet of paper airplanes for you to show our appreciation for teaching our class and for helping us learn our duty better. Thank you for what you do for the Church.
Love,
The Deacons Quorum
I am grateful for their example to me of being priesthood holders and real men.
@Mr_Husky1 Run the other way. And fast. It won’t stop and she cannot commit to a life of abuse. She will play mind games with herself while trying to decide when to leave. The time to leave is now.
@jaredgarrett My parents did not want me to see Grease for the very reasons you shared. I did eventually see it and even bought the soundtrack album. It wasn’t until I got older that I realized that my mom was right- the way I wanted to live was the opposite of what the movie portrayed.
@nicoraytruth Thank you for reminding me of so many riches I enjoy in the Church. I am surrounded by people truly seeking to follow Jesus and love one another. It is real and I am so blessed.
