@dilanesper It’s quite nice to read something this comprehensive that mirrors my own opinions on these various issues. Thanks for this thoughtful thread.
@Joshuad4045@Sqorbnj@jchristenson_@jdowningsardine The judge could order what she wanted. The AG’s office didn’t have that power unless the defendant agreed. If the defendant turned down a harsher deal, the only other options were dismissal or forcing the victim to testify again when he didn’t want to.
@TWTThisIsNow@literaryeric@sam_d_1995 She changed her mind, which she’s entitled to do. But it’s not what she told the judge initially. HPM has a comprehensive story worth reading on the case: https://t.co/7uezFWBx2M
@Sqorbnj@jchristenson_@jdowningsardine The first trial was a 5-7 hung jury, and the victim did not want to go through the awful trauma of testifying again in a second trial. His mother supported the deal at the time but later changed her mind. Seriously, what should have the AG’s office done in those circumstances?
@literaryeric@sam_d_1995 The willful mischaracterization of this story by the campaign and so many others repeating it is nauseating and disappointing. Thank you for pushing back!
@rcobooth@BradWilcoxIFS His response captures the sentiment behind so much conservative male opposition to abortion. It’s the “shame on you for [dating in your 20s, etc.], and you should therefore be punished by suffering the consequences in the form of an outcome that you didn’t want in the end.”
@thehandsomezach I trust your assessment here. Do you have any thoughts on what would be effective for people who speed excessively and chronically, or are among the most reckless drivers on the road? Genuinely asking.
@xurbanxcowboyx His comments are outrageous, so attack them on his merits. But sentiment like this is why so many people in rural areas hate stereotypical urban liberals. Don’t embody their worst ideas and prove them right.
The evil done by this administration—from its lawless rampage in Minnesota, to deporting persecuted people back to totalitarian states, to taking food and medicine from starving children, often while blaspheming the name of Christ—is staggering.
May justice roll like a river.
I’m increasingly convinced that the willingness to change your mind is the ultimate sign of intelligence. The most impressive people I know change their minds often in response to new information. It’s like a software update. The goal isn't to be right. It's to find the truth.
@emilyebytx It’s literally just an administrative stay. That’s all it is! SCOTUS did not accept any arguments on the merits. Alito does not have the power to do so.
