Yesterday, I officially discharged Mr. Sande Stephen at UCI Mulago, Uganda’s FIRST bone marrow transplant patient treated on home soil. For decades, this cure meant selling land to go abroad. Today, we proved “Made in Uganda” care is world-class. Sickle cell cure is next.
The structure for the proposed new School of Pharmacy is the most ambitious in the region. Council has advised management to make provisions for incubation spaces focusing on pharmaceutical production, thus paving the way for pharmaceutical sovereignty, a Uganda Vision 2040 goal.
Pharmacy students know that solutions to most of man's ailments exist under the sun, locked up in various living and non-living creations. So it was impressive to find that the School's medicinal garden is well stocked and maintained.
On 7-8 April, the Council of @PharmacistsUg visited @kiuvarsity for inspection & support supervision of the Pharmacy programs. Council was impressed by the progress made over the years, especially in creating new & innovative postgraduate programs under the School of Pharmacy.
A pharmacist is a versatile chemical and clinical expert whose "office" can be a manufacturing plant, a research lab, a courtroom, a lecture room, or a hospital ward just as easily as a community pharmacy.
REASON WHY:-
The Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) is a 5-year professional degree designed to produce a "10-star pharmacist" with a scope of practice that extends far beyond community drug dispensing.
1. The Manufacturing Plant (Industrial Expert)
The BPharm degree is the primary qualification for supervising pharmaceutical production in Uganda.
Production Oversight: The curriculum allocates 54 credit units (19.8%) specifically to the production of pharmaceuticals.
Quality Assurance (QA) & Control (QC): Pharmacists are trained in 17 credit units of quality analysis, including microbiological auditing and instrumental methods like HPLC and UV-Vis.
International Standards: According to WHO NRA Maturity Level 3 and 4 standards, the head of production or the "Qualified Person" in a manufacturing facility is required to be a pharmacist.
2. The Research Lab (Chemical & Formulation Expert)
Pharmacists are equipped to lead the discovery and development of new medicines.
Drug Design: The program includes extensive training in Pharmaceutical Chemistry (approx. 28 CU) and Pharmaceutics (approx. 20 CU).
Innovation: BPharm graduates are trained in biotechnology, drug delivery systems, and natural products chemistry, qualifying them for Research and Development (R&D) roles.
3. The Hospital Ward (Clinical Expert)
More than half of a pharmacist's academic training is focused on direct patient care.
Clinical Pharmacy: A total of 143 credit units (52.4%) are dedicated to patient care and pharmacotherapeutics.
Pharmacovigilance: Pharmacists are trained to monitor and manage adverse drug reactions and clinical trials.
Collaborative Care: They work in clinical settings as caregivers and decision-makers regarding complex medication therapies.
4. The Courtroom (Forensic & Regulatory Expert)
The pharmacist's role includes legal and investigative responsibilities.
Forensic Investigation: The BPharm curriculum includes 23 credit units (8.4%) dedicated to Forensic Investigation and Prosecution.
Expert Witness: They are trained in the legalities of drug regulation and the prosecution of pharmaceutical-related crimes.
Regulatory Affairs: Pharmacists manage the legal registration of drugs and ensure compliance with the National Drug Authority (NDA).
5. The Warehouse (Supply Chain Expert)
Pharmacists are essential to the logistics of global health.
Logistics Management: The curriculum includes a dedicated module on Health Supply Chain Management (PHM5203).
Security of Supply: They ensure that medicines are stored and distributed under strict Good Distribution Practices (GDP) to maintain efficacy. @KagutaMuseveni@UpsaUganda@mbupsa@mupsa@VUKampala@VUPSAofficial@MinofHealthUG@AbacusPharmaLtd@VUPSAofficial #pharmacist #ugandanpharmacist #pharmacy #NDHPbill2025
The Council @PharmacistsUg visited @BusitemaUni for routine support supervision of the Bachelor of Pharmacy program. This is in line with the statutory mandate from the PDA 1970. Recommendations given to create a future-ready Pharmacist for the Vision 2040's Pharma Sector.

Grateful to the Permanet Secretary Min of Health, Dr. Diana Atwine for gracing our Annual CPD launch of the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda last week! Her call to action against antimicrobial resistance resonates deeply. Let's continue transforming pharmacy practice in Uganda
Dr Tusiimire noted that while a significant number of Ugandans carry the sickle cell trait, many children with the disease go undiagnosed due to a lack of proactive screening.

Following today's ruling by the EOC in a PSU-led petition against "ring-fencing", I welcomed the ruling on behalf of Council, emphasizing that this shouldn't be perceived as triumph of some professional groups over others, but a call to recognise each other's value in healthcare.
This training is targeting NDA inspectors and other stakeholders and government agencies is being conducted by representatives from International Narcotics Control Board, Universal Postal Union, United States Postal Inspection Service and USAID - Office of inspector general.
Together with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) of Kenya under Operation African Star partnering with the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) we are hosting a 3-day training on Pharmaceutical Traceability Pilot Program to strengthen our regulated supply chains.
