I need to take accountability.
Fourteen years ago, in a moment of unexamined privilege, I listened to an Ed Sheeran song.
I believe it was A Team.
I hummed it. I may have even said, out loud, that the melody was “nice.
I now understand that humming A Team in 2012 was materially indistinguishable from genocide.
The fact that I was sixteen and on a school bus is no excuse. Silence is violence. Also singing is violence.
I am listening. I am learning. I am donating the $1.37 I once spent on + to a GoFundMe I have not verified. I have unfollowed Ed. I have also unfollowed the concept of “songs.” I have deleted Thinking Out Loud from my muscle memory. If it starts playing in a supermarket I will lie down in the cereal aisle and wait to be educated.
To everyone harmed by my historic consumption of a ginger man with a guitar: I see you. I hear you. I am centering you. I am centering you so hard that I have written this in the first person, which I now recognize may itself be centering me, so I apologize for the apology, and also for the sentence that just apologized for the apology.
I do not expect forgiveness.
From now on I will only listen to artists who have posted the correct carousel, used the correct words, and never once played a venue owned by a person I have been told is bad. If that leaves me with three songs and a rain stick, so be it.
In solidarity,
and also in fear of the quote-tweet,
a person who once knew all the words to Lego House and will never, ever recover.
To all the actors, musicians and other celebrities:
We don’t give a fuck about your political views or ideologies.
When I watch a movie, I’m trying to escape reality, not to be lectured by an actor who believes fame and money makes them morally superior.
When I pay to attend a concert, I’m there for the music. If you stop the show to scream political slogans and demand that the audience repeat them, fuck right off. You’ve lost me as a fan.
Celebrities seriously need to check their egos. You are not as important, influential or universally adored as you think you are.
We love the characters you play and the music you create. That doesn’t mean we worship the person behind them.
Entertain us. Spare us the sermon.
Sorry. Not sorry.
Almost all morality is actually just downstream of how people feel. If it makes them feel icky, then it’s immoral. If it doesn’t, then it’s not. It really isn’t any more complicated than that. It’s very funny that people imagine themselves to be engaged in something rigorous.
The handwringing, sanctimonious, accusatory op-eds are being penned as we speak: Poor lad was hounded to death by the far right.
His blood is on the hands of the woke crowd that fell for his blatant, absurd lies.
I wish he had hung in. Could have made a great comedian. Clearly talented in the Bullshit Arts.
He could have made a pile lighting up the woke folx he scammed.
I'm 43 now, and I've now seen three distinct phases in my life regarding attitudes towards gender/sex. Here's a handy guide for determining which one is the correct take:
1) Pre-1990ish: "Little Billy can't play with dolls b/c he's a boy and everyone knows boys don't play with dolls" ❌
2) 1990-2010: "Little Billy can play with dolls if he wants, boys can play with dolls. It doesn't make him any less of a boy" ✅
3) 2010 - Present : "Little Billy IS a girl because he plays with dolls, because everyone knows boys don't play with dolls" ❌
As we can see, #2 is the correct choice. #1 and #3 are examples of toxic right wing gender norms, and toxic left wing gender norms, respectively.
That's the funny thing about gender ideology; despite its adherents loud claims that they are somehow smashing traditional gender-based norms and stereotypes, they're actually rigidly enforcing them.
The truly enlightened viewpoint is that there is no right or wrong way to be a boy or girl and kids should feel free to explore and play with whatever they want without activists with an agenda slapping an inappropriate label on them and forcing them into a pathway towards lifelong medicalization and dependency on Big Pharma.
This is what a brain looks like with no priors.
Your brain is a prediction machine. Every sensory input gets compared against an expected input built from prior experience. When reality matches your model, you feel nothing. When reality breaks your model, you feel wonder.
She's around two. Her model of the world is microscopic. A train is 200 tons of metal moving 50 mph through her field of view, and her brain has no template that fits. The prediction error is so large her face becomes the prediction error.
This is Karl Friston's free energy principle in real time. The brain minimizes surprise by updating its model. Children update constantly because almost everything is new. Adults update almost never because almost everything matches a prior.
That's why adults can stand next to the same train and feel nothing. Their model already contains it. The signal gets predicted away before it reaches conscious awareness.
The wonder window narrows as priors fill in. After that, you have to manufacture novelty. She still gets it for free.
You used to react to everything this way. Then your brain finished its training run.
An LLM that can understand and debate the intricacies of consciousness has zero consciousness
A human with severe cognitive decline can understand nothing but has "full consciousness"
So are people's definition of "consciousness" really just a stand-in for "humanness" ?
