Dipankar Bhattacharya, the chairman of Baduria Municipality, is currently under arrest in a corruption and leading recovery over 3 crore. Out of that, ₹2.24 crore was recovered by police from beneath a jute field.

But the bigger story lies beyond the cash recovery. A walk through Baduria reveals how power was misused and corruption institutionalised under his watch. People with pucca houses, double-storey homes and even garden houses allegedly secured houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana by paying bribes of ₹50,000 to ₹60,000. Even Dipankar’s relative also get the benefit.

Meanwhile, genuinely poor families living in crumbling houses were denied benefits simply because they could not arrange the money demanded from them.

The irregularities did not stop there. There are also allegations that some beneficiaries, despite already owning two houses, used PMAY funds to construct shops instead of homes.

Take the case of Rajesh Mukherjee — resident of same 12 number ward struggling to survive with his family, yet unable to receive any government benefit despite repeated attempts.

And this is just one snapshot. Similar allegations and stories are now surfacing across the entire area.
