Raphaël Fischer and Dr Abt’s team at @Penn_Transplant publish the first 1st case report on the use of NRP in pediatric DCD donors for liver transplantation in a small adult recipient https://t.co/OhKUFzE5v7
tobacco control saved ~4M lives & added 76M yrs back into our communities bc we treated it like a health threat.
#alcohol causes cancer too.
but we’ve normalized the risk, stalled the response & cont. to ignore its heavy societal costs.
we know the science. what’s stopping us?
Staggering details from this story:
- After TX banned abortion, rate of sepsis shot up more than 50% for women hospitalized when they lost their pregnancies in the 2nd trimester
- The rate of maternal deaths in TX rose 33% btwn 2019 + 2023 even as national rate fell by 7.5%
A new analysis suggests ~2 in 5 liver transplants from donation after circulatory death donors, recorded as not using machine perfusion (MP), may actually have undergone MP—potentially underestimating MP’s impact in transplant studies.

Oluwadamilola Fayanju, MD, MA, MPHS, is joining us for Grand Rounds for the Seventh Annual Asa G. Yancey, Sr. Lecture! Dr. Fayanju will be giving her talk, Towards a Better Version of Our (Surgical) Selves.
Location: Ford Auditorium
appreciative of the opportunity to be interviewed & included in this incredibly important @sciam piece by @SimarSBajaj on the health risks of alcohol & practical guidance for drinking safely.

RFK's Children's Health Defense is making money selling a child's onesie with the phrases "No Vax, No Problem" and "Unvaxxed, Unafraid" to parents for $26.
Now that RFK is "pro-vaccine", will he ask his organization to stop selling these vehemently anti-vaccine products?
🩺 @PennMedicine spotlight:
The Penn Medicine Liver Transplant Team evaluated Chenelle Watson (second from left) for a needed liver transplant. Her husband Marlon (left) was a suitable living donor and able to donate a portion of his liver for this life saving procedure.
Dr. Kenneth Rothstein and Dr. Peter Abt are a part of Chenelle’s care team that assisted with her transplant in May 2024. A separate team performed the living donor surgery on Marlon.
I was on @DGlaucomflecken and @LGlaucomflecken’s #KnockknockHiPodcast. We talked social media, unions in medicine, & why I care so much about pain management. A dream come true after following them on here for years! Available wherever you get your podcasts. Link in next tweet!
Great working with @MMendizabalMD on this!
Still much to learn about Liver disease in CF and how CFTR modulators may reduce liver injury and the need for combined lung-liver transplant. The decrease in lung transplant is encouraging!
@pennsurgery
Happy to share our latest research on CFTR modulators and their impact on organ transplantation in CF patients
❌Liver Tx rates remained stable post-CFTR mod introduction
✅Lung tx dropped by 81%.
‼️More data needed to assess liver outcomes

Last week, I joined @whyy#Studio2 to discuss alcohol policy, its overlooked link to cancer, & explored how #PublicHealth strategies can make a lasting impact on our communities.

National data is important to understand how NRP and ex-situ MP are being used for transplantation, and to track outcomes. Using this as well as @Aortologist method to identify NRP cases, we can create more rigorous TXP studies with observational data!

Excited about our work in @amjtransplant ! We quantify a gap in US data on liver machine perfusion(MP), and estimate that up to a 1/4 of transplanted DCD livers that are listed as no MP, received MP! Important with the MP boom since 2022!
@Penn_Transplant@PennLDI@NCSP_Penn
A new report published in @amjtransplant by @munoz_nic, Emily Minus, @ElizabethSonnenberg and Dr. Peter Abt quantifies the underreporting of liver machine perfusion in US national data. https://t.co/Ub97XchSEa
Using this method, we may be able to identify “back to base” machine perfusion techniques, and cases where the MP variable was incorrectly assigned. Importantly, up to a quarter or more of transplanted DCD livers that are reported as not undergoing MP, likely underwent MP!
