To mark this year's International Day of #WomenInDiplomacy, the Ministry today hosted a panel discussion, "Women in Action: Diplomacy across Sectors", featuring international negotiators from @MoHmv@AGOmv@MFAORmv & @MoEnvmv.
The Ministry welcomes the UK’s decision to suspend tariffs on tuna products from the Maldives. This is a very positive step that gives Maldivian tuna a fair opportunity to compete in the UK market. While the Maldives is currently the 9th largest supplier of tuna to the UK, our products are leading in the sustainability segment, and this move further strengthens the recognition of the sustainability credentials of our fisheries.
We extend special appreciation to President @Mmuizzu for his strong leadership in prioritising the fisheries sector and advancing strategic international partnerships.
Most importantly, the benefits of this decision will flow directly to our fishers, their communities, and our processing sector.
The 30th Session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC), hosted by the Maldives for the first time, concluded today following a week of negotiations on the conservation and management of tuna and tuna-like species in the Indian Ocean. The Session was attended by 29 Members of the Commission, 2 Cooperating Non-Contracting Parties (CNCPs), and 2 observer countries. We extend our sincere appreciation to the 225 delegates who participated in the week-long meeting in the Maldives.
The 30th Session resulted in the adoption of seven resolutions, including binding catch limits for yellowfin tuna and swordfish, as well as strengthened compliance measures. The Ministry thanks President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for his leadership and support in hosting the 30th edition of the meeting in the Maldives. We also express our appreciation to all stakeholders, including MSPEA, @MTCCPlc , @MoFAmv, @mformpcmv, and @hdcmaldives, for their invaluable support in ensuring the smooth conduct of the Session.
During the Session, the Maldives tabled and led negotiations on three resolutions that were successfully adopted by the Commission: the resolution on the conservation of mobulid rays; the resolution strengthening mandatory statistical reporting requirements; and the resolution promoting the objectives of the IOTC through cooperation with the BBNJ Agreement, which upgraded last year’s recommendation into a binding resolution of the Commission. The Maldives also played a key role, together with South Africa, in securing the adoption of binding catch limits for yellowfin tuna.
As host of the 30th Session, the Maldives reaffirms its commitment to science-based, sustainable, and equitable management of tuna fisheries in the Indian Ocean, and to continued regional cooperation for the long-term sustainability of shared marine resources.

We were thrilled to welcome Prof. @valentin_schatz , an expert on international fisheries law for an insightful lecture on UNCLOS, particularly the prescriptive and enforcement jurisdictions of coastal states, the UN Fish Stocks Agreement (UNFSA), and the role of Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs).
This session, held in collaboration with the @MvBarCouncil and the Faculty of Shari’a and Law of @MNUedu provided a deep dive into critical maritime issues, fostering a better understanding of coastal state rights and responsibilities in sustainable resource management.
Thank you, Prof. Schatz, for an engaging and informative session that left attendees with a new perspective on ocean governance!
Public lecture: "The Role of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the UN Fish Stocks Agreement in Indian Ocean Fisheries Regulation and Enforcement".
Munshidha Ibrahim, Director of Fisheries Management, shared key insights on challenges for sustainable fisheries management at yesterday’s panel discussion hosted by the World Bank. She emphasized how climate change is reshaping the industry and stressed the importance of diversification for long-term resilience.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources delivered its statement on fisheries cooperation at the Senior Officers Meeting with the European Union. In the statement, the ministry highlighted the need for close cooperation between the @eu_maldives and the Maldives in the management of tuna and tuna-like species in the Indian Ocean. The Maldives also thanked the EU for their extended cooperation in making the 28th Session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission a success.
It was such a pleasure to share our experience in this forum, and to speak about how the effectiveness and sustainability of traditional fishing methods are being threatened by climate change.
Director, Fisheries Management Section of @MFORmv Ms. Munshidha Ibrahim presents the story of the Maldives in the context of sustainable fisheries in the face of climate change, at the 17th round of Informal Consultations of States Parties to the UN Fish Stocks Agreement #ICSP17
A delegation from the #Maldives is taking part in the 28th Session of the #IOTC being held in Bangkok. Maldives urges member States to prioritise the sustainability of the tuna stocks in the Indian Ocean during the 5-day negotiations. We call for the adoption of a sound management measure on drifting FADs and on the conservation of sharks. We also encourage members to adopt the proposal on a management procedure for skipjack tuna. Our hope is for the #IOTC to be a leader among #RFMOs in adopting science-based conservation and management measures for the betterment of the coastal communities and the health of tuna stocks.
