Hockey Players:
Confidence is such an important part of reaching our potential in the game. It’s something that’s widely talked about, but ebbs and flows so much on our journeys to becoming the players we want to be.
For me, there are 3 types of confidence.
The first is very surface level and it's what you get when you achieve results. It's very dependent on external factors and comes and goes based on whether you win or you lose…you get the carrot or you don't…or maybe you potentially luck into something.
Think of going on a scoring drought and then you score a goal because the defensemen shoots one off your ass and it goes into the net. All of the sudden, we got the result (goal) and we feel so much better about our game. For all the players out there, you know what I'm talking about! This short term boost is great, but unfortunately it's extremely...short term.
The second type of confidence is what you earn from the work that you put in. If you consistently put in the work on a daily basis on a specific skill you're going to end up mastering that skill and feeling more confident in your abilities.
This confidence is much more in your control and isn’t based upon or determined by external factors or the praise of others. Think of shooting 100 pucks in the basement every morning before school and then loving the feeling of how your shot feels on the ice - it just feels harder. This confidence is awesome.
Then the third type of confidence is the confidence you earn from having a plan to deliberately outwork your competition. It's going into the gym and seeing 10 reps and doing 11…one more than everyone else. It's getting up a little bit earlier than your peers everyday to work on a skill knowing everybody else is still sleeping.
It’s the knowledge that you’re outworking and outwilling your competition, earning not just a confidence but a swagger knowing you prepared and worked harder than everyone else.
The best kind of confidence is EARNED, not given.
Me, @KenJacobySports, and @JoeTheShowQCSN may have to watch our backs. Matt Ustaski is coming for our jobs with his play by play debut in the 3rd period tonight. Lucky for us he is a pretty good hockey player so may have to hold the broadcasting career for later on. 😂
Back to back Kennedy Cup Champions! Incredible Double OT finish. Captain Jack Rhyner gets the golden goal! Proud is an understatement!!! #KC23#RollPack 🐺
