VIDEO: The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has urged the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and the Ministry of Water and Environment to demarcate wetlands across the country, arguing that evictions alone will not stop encroachment on gazetted wetland areas.
Speaking during a visit to Buggu Village in Busabala, Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso District, where more than 50 houses were recently demolished, ULS Treasurer Arthur Isiko on Saturday said the society was exploring ways to help affected residents seek legal redress.

A traditional healer locally known as Jjajja Bamweyana, a resident of Busabala in Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso District, was among those affected by the National Environment Management Authority's (NEMA) recent eviction drive. Bamweyana claims that since authorities demolished his shrine, his spirits have been angered and have begun terrorizing local residents. Threatening to abandon the area entirely, the healer warned that @nemaug and the evicting authorities will be held solely responsible for any misfortune that befalls the community.

Busabala residents who suffered recent NEMA evictions reportedly sought financial relief from Gen Salim Saleh in Kapeeka, Nakaseke District. However, following reports that some of the people who went to meet him were not victims, the group was allegedly turned away.
Speaking to some of the affected persons, it was reported that out of 100 people who went to Kapeeka, only 40 had their houses demolished and therefore qualified for financial assistance. Each of those who received support was given Shs600,000.

Miriat Nakanaabi, 42, the woman seen in a viral video attempting to run into oncoming traffic, says helplessness drove her to despair after NEMA’s Lubigi wetland evictions in Kawaala II.
Nakanaabi, a single mother of six, returned from Kalerwe market to find her restaurant items destroyed and seven rental houses—her sole livelihood—demolished.
To support the victims, the Uganda Law Society (ULS) visited Kawaala on June 3, to assess the damage and explore avenues for legal redress. NEMA maintains the operations are crucial to restoring degraded wetlands amid rising climate concerns.
