Results from our human challenge study out - two doses of the oral live attenuated vaccine CVD 1902 protects against infection from S. Paratyphi A. One step closer to a licensed vaccine against this pathogen which causes thousands of deaths every year. Thanks to all involved!
In a trial in healthy U.K. adults who were challenged with S. Paratyphi A in a controlled human infection model, two doses of the candidate vaccine CVD 1902 led to protection against S. Paratyphi A infection. Full VASP phase 2b trial results: https://t.co/YQNV1uWywN
Great to speak at @BactiVac@MicrobioSoc meeting today on paratyphoid human challenge models and how they could help accelerate pathway to much needed paratyphoid A vaccines
NEW:
Britain’s grim winter of strikes, falling incomes and a worsening NHS crisis is not some unfortunate series of events
It’s the inevitable result of a decade of Tory austerity that steadily weakened the state’s capacity to respond to shocks

🚨 NEW JOB POST 🚨
Adult Clinical Research Fellow position available!
This is an exciting opportunity to join the team that have been working on the rapid clinical development of vaccines against COVID-19 & other key vaccine-related studies.
@OxPaediatrics | @UniofOxford
HTD have looked at our last 93 cases of #EntericFever, mainly outpatients attending HTD’s travel walk-in clinic. We managed most patients entirely as outpatients (mainly with oral azithromycin), with good effect. More 👇

As the monkeypox virus (MPX) outbreak continues, a lot of data emerging in real-time & being rapidly disseminated (as well as misinformation). I complied the unfolding scientific data (with direct links to papers and threads) on what we (don’t) know so far. #IDTwitter 🧵(1/n)
With a unique collaboration with the @UMmedschool we have begun recruiting for our new paratyphoid vaccine.
In the first study of its kind, after vaccination, our volunteers will be ‘challenged’ with paratyphoid to see whether the vaccine can prevent infection.

From today people should self-isolate if they develop a new continuous cough or fever or anosmia.
We have been monitoring emerging symptom data on COVID-19 and adding anosmia slightly increases sensitivity, and may lead to earlier isolation.
To mark #MayDay I'd like to thank all our brilliant key workers, especially the 47 newly qualified doctors who have come across the country and the world to work at the Whittington Hospital.
I nominate @DavidLammy, @AnnelieseDodds and @nick_forbes to #ThankAWorker.
This is really important - if you need urgent medical care, the NHS is ready to help you. COVID-19 does not change this.
People who might be having a heart attack, stroke or life-threatening emergency usually do much better the faster they get medical care.
I did a deep dive into the COVID literature scanning 1300+ PubMed articles. I put together what I think is a core group of papers for clinicians and medical educators.

#COVID19 hospitalisation and ICU admissions stratified by age group in the US:
- 20-44 age group: ~1 in 5 hospitalised, 1 in 20 in ICU
- 45-64 age group: ~1 in 3 hospitalised, 1 in 10 in ICU
The risk of severe disease and intensive care admission in young adults is not zero.
More great news in the fight against #COVID19! A European adaptive RCT of antiviral treatment is now recruiting & it includes the following arms: standard of care (SoC); SoC + remdesivir; SoC+ Kaletra; SoC + Kaletra + interferon-beta-1a. Well done to the trial team on launching.
