Our leaders can do better. The primary health care centers are the bedrock of our healthcare.
This is not a doctor's problem, it's a Nigerians problem. It's our job to demand for better healthcare.
I stand with Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, and demand NMCN revoke its guidelines as it is counter-productive. And here is why you too should Stand with Nurses!
Background:
The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria [NMCN] updated its guidelines for certificate verification, introducing stricter requirements, affecting all nurses, including those looking to work abroad or for other professional advancements in the following ways:
1. From March 2024, Nurses are mandated to pay a non-refundable fee covering admin costs, including courier services.
2. Nurses are required to have a minimum of 2-year post-qualification experience before applying for certificate verification. This is after years of study and practice.
3. Nurses are mandated to have practicing license of at least 6 months remaining before expiration to be eligible.
5. Nurses are mandated to prepare for a minimum 6-month wait time for the verification process, meaning they may have to wait for 1 year or/and more for verification.
Implication
🚀This implies tougher times, bias and unpredicatble waiting period for Nigerian-trained Nurses and Midwives looking for opportunities to work and further skills abroad. This could mean Nigeria's billion Naira Nursing education sector might decline, as potential students may look towards neigboring countries for nursing education without added burdens, worsening brain drain and producing Nurses without educational connections to Nigeria to bring them back. The approach is also counter-productive to the FG's long-term plan to increase fx remitances, as Nigerian nurses are an effective source of $USD to the Nigerian economy. An ineffective policy approach.
For Nurses and Midwives
Whilst the matter is in court as to determine NMCN's power and including pending protests, I recommend the following urgent advocacy steps to the Nurses and Midwives:
🚀Write a formal petition, position and/or call the following, [@nassnigeria] has oversight function on Ministry of Health and bodies such as NMCN]:
1. Chairman, House of Representatives Committe on Health Institutions, Hon. Amos Gwamna Magaji [+2347033777017, [email protected]];
2. Deputy Chairman, House of Representatives Committe on Health Institutions, Hon. Adesola Olumuyiwa Adedayo [+2348025592858, [email protected]]
3. Chairman, House of Representatives Committe on HealthCare Services; Hon. Tanko Sununu [+2348032611059, [email protected]];
4. Deputy Chairman, House of Representatives Committe on HealthCare Services, Hon. Bassey Ekpeyong Akiba [+2348033455177, [email protected]]
4. Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Sen. Banigo Ipalibo Harry [+2348038817059, [email protected], @HarryBanigo];
5. Deputy Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Sen. Samaila Dahuwa Kaila [+2348033139423; [email protected]]
6. Chairman, House of Representatives Committe on Public Petitions; Hon. Michael Etaba [+2348066882463, [email protected]];
The Nigerian Nurses and Midwives Council (@Nigeria_NMC) should focus on addressing foundational issues and quality of incentive for nurses, not stiffling opportunities.
Here are few policy recommendations for NMCN to balance the situation:
🚀Consider withdrawing the current circular.
🚀Adopt digital processes for faster certificate verification, potentially completing it within 48 hours.
🚀Implement a free verification process for now, moving towards a graduated fee system based on service years or income.
🚀Offer conditional waivers for critical skill holders or those who pledge to return after working abroad.
🚀Enhance local working conditions, salaries, and career opportunities.
🚀Initiate regular dialogues with the nursing and midwifery community for policy feedback.

In 2019, getting a job in the as a registered nurse who is based in Nigeria or any other parts of Afrika and passed IELTS and CBT was very easy. In fact some people got so many interviews and job offers. In some cases, multiple certificates of sponsorship (CoS).
Fast forward to 2022 after the pandemic, the redlist came in actively. A lot of political back and forth came into play, and the cost of exams and other registration fees skyrocketed. Then, job opportunities steadily declined. (PLS RT 🙏🏽)
Now, there are nurses who have good experiences, vast in their skills, have passed IELTS and CBT, yet no job opportunities talk more of interviews. Some have had to retake their exams because it expired while they were actively searching (PLS RT 🙏🏽)
Despite this, some persons still manage to get job offers, and nurses' feom overseas are still managing to relocate with these same opportunities. How are they managing to do this?
I have spoken with almost 500 nurses in the last few months, and one thing stood out; their personal statement and cover letters, amongst other things.
Here are some websites that will help you prepare an outstanding personal statement for that job application.

If you know other sites for a good sample of cover letters and personal statements, please add in the reply.
Please share this if you come across it on your TL 🙏🏽♥️💯
