On July 12, the NID Gandhinagar community stepped out of the studios and onto the field to participate in the "#EkPedMaaKeNaam" plantation drive, organized in collaboration with the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC).

Over 100 enthusiastic volunteers (including our newly welcomed M.Des. first-year students,  faculties, and staff ) contributed to planting nearly 600 saplings at Sector 30, Gandhinagar. For us, environmental stewardship is a core part of who we are; design is about shaping a better future, and today, we did that one tree at a time.

Vishwaroopam is more than a souvenir—it is a reflection of India’s spirit of aspiration, resilience, and quiet confidence as it steps forward on the global stage. It embodies the nation’s belief that progress is strongest when innovation is rooted in heritage, and that the journey to the stars begins on the ground, shaped by human effort and collective purpose.

The spherical form, symbolizing Earth, represents India’s expanding global presence through its achievements in space, particularly those led by ISRO. The lower hemisphere, crafted in silver using traditional sheet-embossing techniques by master artisans from Hupari in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, pays tribute to the hands and minds that build the nation. Renowned for their precision and patience, these artisans mirror the dedication of India’s scientists and engineers—where discipline, perseverance, and attention to detail transform ambition into reality. The intricate relief work on the silver surface captures this relentless pursuit of excellence that has carried India into the ranks of leading spacefaring nations.

The upper hemisphere, created through modern 3D-printing technology, represents the northern half of the Earth, with India highlighted in gold. The contrast between the warm, wood-toned finish and metallic elements reflects the harmony between India’s grounded scientific rigor and its luminous achievements on the world stage. The golden emphasis on the Indian subcontinent stands as a quiet celebration of national pride and scientific accomplishment.

Vishwaroopam ultimately tells a larger story: that India’s journey into space is not merely technological, but deeply human—shaped by centuries of craftsmanship, a culture of knowledge, and the collective will of its people to explore, contribute, and inspire.
