Today marks the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. As we honor the 1.5 million Armenians murdered by the Ottoman Empire across modern-day Turkey, Syria, and Armenia, we must refuse to let history repeat itself.

In 2020, the military forces of Azerbaijan and Turkey attacked the Armenian population in Nagorno-Karabakh. In 2023, Azerbaijan expelled over 100,000 Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh, continuing the genocidal campaign that had begun over 100 years prior.

On this day of remembrance, we reaffirm the right of the Armenian people — and all people — to freedom, safety, and self-determination.

The #UN team that visited Nagorno Karabakh was shocked to find that 100,000 #Armenians had left in a hurry. However, the team didn't see any damaged hospitals, schools, residential houses, cultural or religious objects in #Karabakh. They also saw no damage to agricultural infrastructure, or dead animals, and didn't collect any facts on violence against civilians. In short, the UN team in #NagornoKarabakh did what Azerbaijan wanted the international community to hear from them.

Stefan Dujarric, the official representative of the United Nations, said:

"The agency records that #Armenia accuses #Azerbaijan of ethnic cleansing, an accusation that Baku denies. Azerbaijan, for its part, insists that "Armenians of the enclave were allowed to stay in the territory, and also assures that it doesn't intend to attack Armenia." The visit comes weeks later after #Azerbaijani troops took control of an enclave in their territory inhabited by ethnic Armenians, triggering a mass exodus of more than 100,000 Armenians.

Our partners were surprised by the haste with which the local population left their homes and the suffering that this ordeal probably caused them" the UN notes.

According to UN data, currently 50-1000 ethnic Armenians remain in Karabakh. "The team emphasizes the need to restore trust, adding that it will take time and effort on all sides. The UN plans to continue regularly visiting the region" said Dujarric.

It's sad to see how Azerbaijan is using an authoritative organization like the #UnitedNations to justify the ethnic cleansing of Armenians in Nagorno Karabakh. Why was the UN group shocked to find Nagorno Karabakh empty of Armenians? Are they not aware that it has become impossible for Armenians to live in the Armenian settlements that came under the control of the armed forces of Azerbaijan?

#People were in danger of losing their lives and were forced to save their lives by leaving Nagorno Karabakh. Do they not know these basic facts in the UN that they decided to be shocked when they saw Nagorno Karabakh empty?

How many Armenians who moved from Nagorno Karabakh to Armenia did the UN talk to and collect their stories? Maybe it is necessary to find out from the forcibly displaced people why they left their thousand-year-old homeland, and then to be shocked by the haste of their departure?

Instead, the UN is announcing what the officials of Azerbaijan or the people who stayed on the spot dictated to them. And is it possible that these 50 Armenians feel a threat to their lives, that's why they don't describe the real dangers?

Doesn't the UN have facts about the murders, destructions, and kidnappings of the civilians of Nagorno Karabakh by Azerbaijan? Don't they follow the events of the funerals of people that are taking place in the settlements of Armenia these days?

It's obvious that Azerbaijan accompanied the UN group to those settlements and districts of Nagorno Karabakh where there were no destroyed buildings, looted houses of Armenians, or killed civilians. Azerbaijan kept the UN group under total control. That is the reason why, as the UN states, its access to the villages was limited.

The UN is no longer needed in Nagorno Karabakh. When the UN mission was needed, you did not enter Nagorno Karabakh. And you went to Karabakh at a time when no one felt the need for your presence, except for Azerbaijan, which carried out #EthnicCleansing.

Your visit to Nagorno Karabakh is late and unjustified. I would say that this and subsequent UN visits to Karabakh will become harmful, because Azerbaijan will refer to such fabricated reports and claim that there are no atrocities, that people left of their own free will, that their lives were not threatened, that Armenians can return and live in Nagorno Karabakh, that the Constitution of Azerbaijan guarantees the rights and security of Armenians.

Are you not aware that the Armenians were forcibly displaced from Nagorno Karabakh, because the #war started on September 19? You didn't visit Nagorno Karabakh when Armenians still lived there, and it was necessary to prevent the war and ethnic cleansing in Azerbaijan.

The UN shouldn't discredit itself by becoming a tool in the hands of the dictatorial regime of Azerbaijan. The EU and the US should also refrain from sending a mission to Nagorno Karabakh, because the experience of the UN shows that Azerbaijan is trying to legitimize its ethnic cleansing in Nagorno Karabakh with these visits.

Azerbaijan carried out a 10 month blockade of Artsakh (NK) leaving 120,000 people with no food, gas, or medicine. Armenians are not safe under Azeri rule. Azeris don’t know how to live peacefully.

The Abandoned Cathedral of Ani, built over a thousand years ago, stands in the ruins of the medieval capital of Armenia. It is the largest standing building in Ani, which was the capital of medieval Bagratid Armenia and is now located in present-day eastern Turkey. The cathedral was completed in 1001 AD under the patronage of Queen Katranidem. However, just five decades later, it was captured and converted into a mosque known as the Fethiye Mosque.

Over the centuries, the cathedral and the entire site of Ani endured periods of upheaval and dilapidation. This was exacerbated by the disastrous Mongol invasion in the 13th century, sacking of Ani, and three devastating earthquakes in the 14th century, 19th century, and as recently as 1998.

Ani, often referred to as the "World City," "City of 1,001 Churches," "Cradle of Civilizations," and "City of 40 Gates," is one of the earliest settlements, dating back to 3,000 B.C. Throughout its history, it saw the reigns of various empires, including the Saka Turks, Sasanian empire, Bagratid dynasty, Byzantine empire, Seljuk empire, Ottoman empire, and Russian empire.

The decline of Ani began in earnest in 1239 when the Mongols sacked the city and massacred its population. Subsequently, a 1319 earthquake caused the collapse of the cathedral's conical roof. As a result, Ani was gradually abandoned, and the church fell into disuse.

In 2016, UNESCO declared the Cathedral of Ani, along with the entire site of Ani, a World Heritage site, recognizing its historical significance and architectural beauty despite its state of abandonment and decay.
