We’re just getting started🌙
During their historic journey around the Moon, Artemis II observed lunar targets to study color, texture, topography, and more.
Leading up to the mission and during the flyby, a team of lunar scientists—including some from our Silicon Valley center—trained and guided the crew to use their eyes to observe, describe, and interpret what they were seeing.
Now, scientists are pairing the observations with images the crew took—like these—to create a unique dataset that will inform future missions to the Moon.
There's a lot to process on Day 8 of the @NASAArtemis II mission. With Earth in view from Orion's windows, the astronauts are packing up and reflecting on their lunar journey.
We anticipate that the Orion spacecraft has now departed the lunar sphere of influence — this is when the gravitational pull of the Moon is stronger than the gravitational pull of Earth.
The Artemis II crew are headed home. Splashdown will take place on Friday, April 10.
🚨 @NASAAdmin Jared Isaacman had the PERFECT response to Trump’s proposed 2027 budget cutting $5.6 BILLION (23%) from NASA
“I think the American public and the taxpayers should be judging NASA based on OUTCOMES and NOT how quickly we can spend money every year.”
What a LEGEND.
There’s PLENTY of waste to cut across the board, and Jared is the man to figure out what to cut.
One last look at Earth before we reach the Moon.
This view of the Earth was captured on April 5, the fourth day of the Artemis II mission, from inside the Orion spacecraft. The four astronauts will reach their closest approach of the Moon tomorrow, April 6.
This view just hits different
@Astro_Christina and @astro_reid take a moment to look back at Earth as they continue deep into space toward the Moon.
Orion has successfully completed its translunar injection burn which propells the capsule out of earth's orbit and headed towards the moon. The lunar journey has officially begun!
Nominal translunar injection burn complete. The Artemis II crew is officially on the way to the Moon.
America is back in the business of sending astronauts to the Moon. This time, farther than ever before.
It was inspiring to watch the Artemis II launch yesterday — @NASA’s first crewed mission around the moon since 1972. Our space program has always captured an essential part of what it means to reach beyond what we thought was possible, and I hope the four brave astronauts on this mission will inspire a new generation to follow in their footsteps.
Artemis II astronauts are doing great. The Orion spacecraft is performing well in an impressive elliptical orbit, and the @NASA_Johnson Mission Control team is taking good care of the crew. Meanwhile, back at @NASAKennedy, the teams are out at the pad getting ready for what comes next. We are going to get into a rhythm of launching Moon rockets around here 🇺🇸
