Another 🇰🇪 win in London!
There is coffee and there is Spring Valley Coffee! This Thursday @SpringValleyCoffee was crowned the best new coffee shop at #TheLondonCoffeeFestivalAwards 2026! A Kenyan owned enterprise, it operates ten outlets in Nairobi employing over 100 staff most of them youths.
Because coffee is more than a drink. It’s an invitation. It’s #GoingFarTogether.
As we encourage more investments into Kenya 🇰🇪 #FDI, we are equally working to ensure Kenyan businesses including diaspora- owned companies enter and thrive in the UK 🇬🇧 market.

A lot of discussion going on around the re-denomination of Kenya's SGR loan from US$ to CNY.
What's happening here?
1. If you unbundle the SGR loan as of the last update, there's a commercial bit (US$2.0 billion) & a concessional terms bit (US$1.0 billion)
2. What's being re-denominated is the commercial bit, the concessional portion is in CNY already
3. How is the saving coming about? It's more than re-denomination, it's conversion from a variable US$ interest rate to a fixed CNY interest rate
4. Why is this important? It helps Kenya place a lid on interest rate costs & have visibility of the payment profile going forward, you can't really do that with a variable rate
What's not clear yet?
1. The CNY isn't a particularly liquid currency & Kenya doesn't have it as part of its reserves. So what's the plan around the lumpy payments every 6 months?
2. To answer question 1, there's the chance of a bilateral currency swap as part of this re-denomination of the loan from US$ to CNY
I had this conversation with the National Treasury CS some 7 months ago, see quoted tweet

It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that I announce the passing of my dear mother, Mayi Anne Nanyama Wetang'ula. After a prolonged period of illness, Mama peacefully rested, bringing to an end a remarkable life defined by love, sacrifice, and unwavering faith.
Mayi Anne was more than a mother to me - she was a mentor, a source of strength, and a guiding light. Her wisdom, kindness, and prayers sustained me through every season of life. Her legacy of compassion and humility will forever remain with me.
As we come to terms with this painful loss, I humbly ask for your prayers and support for my family during this difficult time. May Mama's soul rest in eternal peace and may her memory continue to inspire us to live with love, patience, and purpose.
Rest well, Mayi. You fought the good fight.

MAJOR development - The government has announced that starting Dec 25th, 2024 ALL pay bills will be deemed to be virtual electronic tax receipt systems in a bid to widen the tax base.
Senior Economic Advisor, Moses Kuria, says this decision has been arrived at at the disparity between KRA registered ETRs & >2.0M digital payment touch points across the country. He says KRA is aligned.
Musings:
· What does this mean for Sec23 of the Tax Procedures Act & Sec16c of the Income Tax Act?
· I presume it means, by extension, that evidence of mobile money payments will also be deemed as good as an eTIMS receipt & therefore be admissible for income tax deductible purposes
· Go to the MTRS & read about integration of tax systems with 3rd party systems
· See the quoted tweet here. There's a lot more in the pipeline
Kenya's 2024/25 continues to be on a tough terrain. T for Tough!
Aug 2024 Fiscal Update as below:
· Tax revenue collection stood at Kes 153.33 billion, down 5.65% y/y & down 3.88% month-on-month
Musing - Are we expecting a scenario where Supreme Court could uphold the Court of Appeal's nullification of Finance Act 2023? Your guess is as good as mine
· Zero disbursements to counties under the Equitable Share allocation arrangement
Musing - The cash crunch at the devolved units is real. We saw what seemed to be a deal arrived at late this week so September looks promising
· Domestic borrowing stood at Kes 91.77 billion, external borrowing stood at Kes 3.07 billion
· Recurrent spending stood at Kes 109.36 billion, development spending stood at Kes 17.24 billion

Folks,
The East African Community Gazette on Common External Tariffs dated June 30th, 2024 is out.
This is a product of the East African Community's Council of Ministers & works to guide on the alignment of customs duty rates in the region.
Notable highlights.
A 🧵
Note - You'll see 35.0% a lot. It's because it's the customs duty rate for finished products.
For those asking about the status of the Appropriations Bill 2024, it did sail through the Committee of the Whole House stage yesterday afternoon.
Also, the County Allocation of Revenue Bill also did sail through the Committee of the Whole House stage yesterday afternoon.
