What Were the Final Days of Swami Vivekananda Like? Swami Vivekananda passed away in 1902 at the age of just 39. It was 9:10 p.m. at Belur Math. At that time, neither Belur Math nor the nearby villages had electricity, although there was a telephone. Yet no news reporters arrived, and remarkably, none of the newspapers published in Bengal carried the news of his death the following day. Nor did any prominent political leader or celebrated Bengali publicly express condolences. It is astonishing to think about. 🔴 Throughout his short life, Swami Vivekananda endured humiliation, neglect, and repeated rejection. After his father's death, he became entangled in legal disputes with relatives over family property and had to appear in court on numerous occasions. His family lived in extreme poverty. Every morning he would leave home in search of employment, wandering from office to office. Many days, knowing there was no rice, lentils, oil, or salt at home to feed his mother, brothers, and sisters, he would tell his mother, "Don't cook for me today, Mother. I've been invited to a friend's house for dinner." In reality, there was no invitation. He often went hungry so that the rest of the family could eat. It is almost unimaginable. 🍂 He struggled with poverty throughout his life. At the age of 23, he secured a teaching position at the Metropolitan Institution, founded by Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. However, the headmaster—Vidyasagar's son-in-law—disliked Narendra Nath Datta and reportedly had him dismissed, alleging that he did not teach well. This happened despite his extraordinary intellect, scholarship, and eloquence. Once again, he found himself unemployed. Even abroad, a Bengali religious leader allegedly spread false rumours that Vivekananda had several wives, ten or twelve children, and was nothing more than a fraud and a gambler. 💥 He often endured hunger both in India and overseas. In one of his letters, he wrote: "Many times I have passed days without food. I felt that perhaps I would die that very day. Then I would rise, crying, 'Victory to Brahman!' and declare: 'I have no fear. I know neither death nor hunger. I am beyond thirst. What power does the world have to destroy me?'" When the ailing Swami Vivekananda returned to Calcutta after achieving worldwide acclaim, many prominent Bengalis reportedly declined to attend or organise a public reception in his honour. Eventually, Paryichand Mitra agreed but is said to have remarked that since Vivekananda was a Kayastha rather than a Brahmin, he could not truly be a monk and would therefore address him merely as "Brother Vivekananda." By 1898, Americans were deeply inspired by his speeches and writings, while many in his own homeland remained indifferent. That same year, the sick Swami consulted the renowned physician Dr. Rasiklal Dutt at his clinic on Sadar Street in Calcutta. The doctor reportedly charged him forty rupees as a consultation fee and another ten rupees for medicines—a considerable sum in those days. The money was paid by Swami Brahmananda from funds collected for Belur Math. There is no known photograph of Swami Vivekananda after his death. 🛢️ How does an LNG plant actually work? It chills gas to -162°C and shrinks it 600 times so it can cross oceans. Here's the machine behind it. The goal is simple, turn natural gas into liquid so it fits on a ship. Cooling gas to -162°C cuts its volume by roughly 600x. That's what makes global transport possible. It starts with gas processing, stripping out heavy hydrocarbons and impurities. Then the Acid Gas Removal Unit pulls out CO2 and H2S to prevent corrosion and freezing. Dehydration follows, removing every trace of water. Even a little would freeze solid and block the system. The heart is the liquefaction train, where refrigeration cycles chill the gas in stages. At its core sit giant cryogenic heat exchangers, among the largest equipment in the entire facility. Then storage in double walled tanks, and loading onto specialized LNG carriers for export. The scale is enormous. A single train can process 5-8 million tons of LNG a year. This is the technology that lets gas reach markets no pipeline could ever serve. It's why LNG is rewriting global energy trade.

In spite of the fact that Dr. Abbas Araghchi (Iran's Foreign Minister) bagged his Ph.D at the University of Kent, UK, and speaks English fluently, throughout the negotiation process, he did not speak English. He spoke Farsi (Iran's official language) in the presence of the Vice President of America, JD Vance. Other members of the Iranian delegation spoke Farsi, as well. They didn't speak English. 😆 They deliberately stuck to their language in order to assert their national identity. JD Vance was so jittery on sighting Ghalibaf and Araghchi. The fear was boldly written on him. You can go and watch it on Al-Jazeera. I wish our leaders could be 10% as bold as the Iranians. I always feel impressed with their dispositions. Remembered my old tweet. Posting it again in the context of today's discussion in the Tamil Nadu Assembly: Two Tamilians have made a significant impact on the lives of tens of millions of people in the country. They remain largely unknown outside Tamil Nadu. Late Kamarajar, who introduced the mid day meal scheme for children in Tamil Nadu in the mid-1950s (around 70 years ago). Following the Supreme Court’s 2001 order directing all states to implement the scheme, over 110–120 million children now receive nutritious mid-day meals across India. It was decided in the Constitution (adopted in 1950) that English would cease to be an official language after 15 years - i.e., from 26 January 1965. Late Anna fought tooth and nail against this. He strongly argued that English was essential for India’s growth and unity. After a massive agitation in Tamil Nadu lasting nearly two months (with protests building over a longer period), during which scores to hundreds of people lost their lives, the Central Government finally accepted that English would continue as an official language. What would today’s India look like if children stayed out of school due to hunger and Indians remained cut off from English? The nation owes a deep debt of gratitude to Kamarajar and Anna.
