Future message to my kids: Me and your Mom are in fact free childcare for our grandkids. Good grandparents show up for their kids and grandkids. It’s a blessing, not a burden. It’s our job to show up and make life easier. Go on that date with your spouse. Go get that hour to yourself. Go get those errands run. Go take that nap you need. We got you. We didn’t have that help but you will. Always and forever, because that’s how it should be.
dudes who are athletes under 40 won't understand this and that's fine, one day you will...
i just went outside and threw a football around with my son. i'm 48. he's 13. we play all the time... but tonight, i don't know how it happened or what i could do to bottle it... but my arm was pure lightning... no pain. no creaks. no altered motion to ease my shoulder. none of it... just pure rocket fuel tonight...
felt like i was twenty five again... i used to have a cannon. really. i wasn't a QB, but I could throw deep and hard... slants.... deep posts... i could sling it.... then somewhere in my early 40s i couldn't crank it up anymore... i could throw, but with an odd motion... no mustard on the ball... just enough to get it 20-30 yards to play catch... and it's been that way for a while... easy lobs... no heat on the throws. nothing too deep...
but tonight? holy hell. my motion was clean. effortless. i was ripping the ball. my son was complaining. "it's too hard..." sorry, kid. my arm's alive and i'm using it...
i was sending him on 40 yard posts and laying it in... having him run deep slants and throwing dots to the sideline... damn, man. it felt great.
i had to share because all my athletes nearing 50 know exactly what i mean...
every now and then you get a taste your prime again and it's glorious.
Jordan’s midrange game was the deadliest weapon in NBA history.
Not a dunk. Not a three. The shot modern analytics tell you to avoid.
In 1996–97, Jordan made 588 of 1,202 shots from midrange. 48.9%. More makes than anyone in the league, on absurd volume.
Defenders knew the fadeaway was coming.
They still couldn’t stop it.
And in 1998, with a championship on the line, Jordan’s final shot as a Bull was exactly that: a midrange jumper.
The space between the paint and the three-point line.
Nobody ever owned it like Michael Jordan.

Kevin McHale on Larry Bird in today's NBA
“These are the same dudes that can’t guard Luka Doncic, and Luka Doncic is lighting them up.”
“And I’m thinking, ‘Larry is bigger, stronger, faster, and meaner than Luka Doncic. And if Luka is lighting these dudes up, it’d be a five-alarm fire what Larry would do.’”
McHale also added: “Larry would go by you a hell of a lot faster than Luka would go by you. He was a straight-line driver, and he was also just a horse.”
Bird's three straight MVPs, three championships and all around game already speak for themselves. But McHale believes today's NBA would make Larry even more dangerous.
Do you agree with Kevin McHale? Would Larry Bird dominate today's NBA?
