UPDATE: Sioux Falls Homicide Suspect Arrested Following Iowa Pursuit

Sioux Falls Police have released additional details following the homicide investigation that led to the arrest of a suspect in western Iowa.

The victim has been identified as Nysam Chagi, 43, of Sioux Falls, who was found deceased at the scene. Police say the incident was targeted and domestic-related, emphasizing there was no random threat to the public.

The suspect, Yien Dak Duop Chiek, 46, of Sioux Falls, was located by the Iowa Highway Patrol and assisting agencies after a pursuit. He was taken into custody near the Onawa exit on Interstate 29 in Monona County, Iowa, about 30 miles south of Sioux City.

Authorities obtained a warrant charging Chiek with:

- First-Degree Murder (Domestic)

He is currently being held without bond in Iowa while also facing local Iowa charges.

Police said investigators used a combination of:

- Business surveillance video
- Traffic cameras
- Flock license plate reader cameras
- Other investigative technology

Chief John Thum praised officers, investigators, and partner agencies, noting the suspect was taken into custody just over two hours after the initial dispatch, calling it a testament to the teamwork and technology used throughout the investigation.

Update on Pursuit: They were pursuing a suspect wanted in a kidnapping case out of Flandreau. According to traffic, the suspect kidnapped 3 kids. At this time, it is unknown if the children were with the suspect at the time of the pursuit. The vehicle was a 2015 Blue Chrysler 200.

RIP. South Carolina Master Deputy Sheriff Jillian Olson, who gave her life in the line of duty, is the 57th officer lost in 2026.

Master Deputy Sheriff Jillian Olson, 29, passed away during an underwater training exercise on Lake Murray.

Master Deputy Olson had served with the Lexington County Sheriff's Department for five years.

She is survived by her parents and three siblings.
