What many don’t realize is that the term Big Bang, originally suggested by Fred Hoyle pejoratively, is not accurate. There was obviously no Bang, which is more appropriate for compression waves moving through a medium. Nobody can hear banging in space.

With its giant 6.5-meter mirror, NASA’s JWST space observatory has the sensitivity to spot the faintest galaxies in the early universe.

Now, astronomers are trying to enhance its resolution: its ability to separate small objects that are so close together they would normally blur into a single point of light.

To do it, they’re using a novel “keyhole” mode that—paradoxically—blocks much of the light from the mirror. Combining the remaining bright spots through a technique called interferometry allows astronomers to suppress noise and approach the maximum resolution that JWST can achieve.
