Excited to have my article on Equity Momentum and its crowding implications published in @FTAlphaville!
At the end of the day (pun intended) the mechanics of a momentum trade resemble those of a party!

Could the popularity of a narrative become an investment signal?
Nick Baltas @nbaltas) and I discuss new research examining how growing themes may influence demand for certain assets before the resulting price trend becomes fully visible.

In the most recent @TopTradersLive episode, @nbaltas discusses portable alpha / return stacking with trend following.
To paraphrase his opinion:
- If it's an all-equity base, consider constraining equities in trend so you don't double-up on equity risk.
- If it's a stock/bond portfolio, the story is different because the risk is inflation spikes and a more unconstrained profile is better for protecting the main shock profile. The problem isn't when equities fall, but when both equities AND bonds fall.
So should a 100% Equity + 100% Trend fund follow the first prescription?
Not so fast!
Again, we're myopically looking at line-item versus portfolio.
A 100% Equity + 100% Trend fund might be used to replace some equity exposure in a strategic stock/bond mix... which puts us into Nick's second category.
But if we are talking about the rare case of an all equity base, then we're likely talking about an investor with a high risk tolerance as well as a high risk capacity: precisely the type of investor who can likely stomach increased (conditional) equity exposure!
Anyway, worth a listen for Nick's thoughts.
