The decision in Common Cause v. Lewis offers relief for the 2020 legislative maps only — the next step must be lasting reform. Legislation like #HB140NC can enshrine that lasting reform into our state constitution. Let’s get it passed! https://t.co/BeIoJ2373E #ncpol
"But there are dozens of other bills that could be up for consideration that don’t have anything to do with the coronavirus...One bill, the FAIR Act, would let voters decide... on amending the state constit. to make redistricting less political." #ncpol

As stated by Margaret Dickson, one of our board members: "Many believe our democracy is at stake...Our state & nation cannot afford to allow redistricting reform to get swamped in the pandemic atmosphere."

"The fight for the redistricting pen will animate leg races...the state is a key target of nat'l groups who want reform & they’ll likely put millions of $ into the Democratic efforts to control at least 1 house of the legislature." @tmillsNC#ncpol

@BrentWoodcox On a related note, I don’t know who put together the coronavirus info page at https://t.co/YPqIpbEWWd but I was impressed at how much depth it had, both in terms of directly related info and indirectly related info, like tips for parents or links to mental health help
Not sure who needs to hear this, but...
20 ago when data was sanitized 4 personal identifiers, 87% of people's identities could be matched with health diagnosis by using only zip code, DOB & gender.
Just think ab the power of big data in #redistricting.
Thx @machanavajjhala!
VA is getting closer! 👏
“When it comes to bipartisan redistricting, this is the only vehicle that’s moving fwd this year,” said Del. O’Quinn, “& it won’t move again til 2030.”

Let's go #NC! We can't afford 2 wait til 2030 for our next chance, either!
Friendly reminder that Big Data (like what type of alcohol you drink) can be used to predict your voting tendencies. And, an even friendlier reminder that #HB140NC prohibits the use of such data in the #redistricting process!
@Schwarzenegger's comments about #redistricting reform in VA ring true for us here in North Carolina. #HB140NC has the widest bipartisan support of any of the bills in the #ncga--let's get it passed! 🇺🇸
Gerrymandering has always been a bipartisan problem, and it requires a bipartisan solution. I hope the General Assembly will support the amendment as they did in 2019.
On this day in 1812, Gov. Elbridge Gerry approved voting maps for the state of MA that were drawn to favor his party. Although this wasn't the 1st time in US history that such behavior had occurred, the eponymous portmanteau "gerrymander" has become this Founding Father's legacy.
The arguments put forth by these #biz leaders on the need for #redistricting reform in VA are applicable to NC:
"Partisan gerrymandering is an affront...to the public’s sense of fair play, & creates a dysfunctional system of governance that must change.
https://t.co/4VSHd9xKsP
Looking to our northern neighbor & its redistricting efforts: "The proper response to unlawful excess [of extreme partisan gerrymandering] is a restoration of reasonable order not the deployment of unlawful excess in the opposite direction." Well said! 🇺🇸

Enough is enough! It's time for reform!
"Iowa saves its taxpayers millions of $s in legal bills bc the 2 political parties don’t fight over districts in court. Iowa’s maps also have produced more competitive elections, which hold incumbents of all stripes more accountable to voters." #HB140NC https://t.co/60WBrzZpqB
"The reins of political power in the U.S. for the next decade could be determined in this year’s elections — not necessarily by who wins the presidency, but by thousands of lower-profile contests for state legislative seats across the country." https://t.co/FcjGhvVPqD #HB140NC
