Can anyone tell me the one single individual who is leading the protests against police brutality and racial injustice in America? The answer: CITIZENS. In the plural. Nigerian citizens should rise up for their rights and self interest instead of waiting and looking for messiahs.

@cleenfoundation@Pamela_patrick@DSamsonItodo In the context of COVID-19 and proposed enabling laws, parliaments like NASS should ensure that rights are respected even in times of emergency or a health crisis. Laws should should only affect rights to the minimum extent necessary to achieve desired health objectives.
@cleenfoundation@Pamela_patrick@DSamsonItodo Currently, the National Human Rights Commission and some CSOs are doing an online documentation of cases of human rights abuse. Reports and recommendations by such oversight agencies can and should feed into the oversight work of NASS, which should in turn inform their law making
@cleenfoundation@nassnigeria@Pamela_patrick@DSamsonItodo Some public health laws in other jurisdictions provide for adequate compensation to those who have suffered economic loss due to a public health order affecting their trade, property or facilities. Such measures can be explored.
@cleenfoundation@nassnigeria@Pamela_patrick@DSamsonItodo Governments worldwide have taken various steps to ameliorate the adverse effects of this health crisis on citizens and corporate entities. These include distribution of resources and adoption of measures to reduce the pressure of financial obligations on individuals and companies
@cleenfoundation@nassnigeria@Pamela_patrick@DSamsonItodo Individual legislators should also focus on their constituencies and communities at this time. Educating them on COVID-19, undertaking outreach and fact finding and ensuring that their needs are being met.
@cleenfoundation@Pamela_patrick@DSamsonItodo Similar laws were adopted in other countries which sought to provide tax reliefs, suspension of mortgage payments, student loans and other outstanding financial obligations by citizens. However, the Senate is yet to consider this bill.
@cleenfoundation@Pamela_patrick@DSamsonItodo As the institution with the power of the purse, NASS can address the economic implications of COVID19. The House of Reps made an effort by passing an Emergency Economic Stimulus Bill, 2020 which seeks to provide relief, protect jobs and alleviate financial burdens on citizens
