Misleading Claim

Congress, through its official handle, claimed that India’s total debt stood at approximately Rs 29 lakh crore in 2015 and increased to Rs 63 lakh crore by 2025.

This claim is misleading because it presents absolute debt figures without essential economic context.

In economics, government debt is never assessed in isolation. The standard and globally accepted metric is debt as a percentage of GDP, which reflects the size and capacity of the economy. It is also critical to distinguish between overall government debt and external (foreign) debt.

The factual picture is as follows:
▪️India’s debt/GDP in 2014: 66 %
▪️India’s debt/GDP in 2025: 56.5 %

▪️India’s external debt/GDP in 2014: 23.2 %
▪️India’s external debt/GDP in 2025: 19.1 %

These figures clearly show that India’s debt position has improved significantly since 2014, when the Congress-led government left office. Today, India’s debt-to-GDP ratio is well within sustainable limits and compares favorably with that of many major economies.

Why absolute debt figures are misleading
Absolute debt numbers (e.g., Rs 29 lakh crore vs. Rs 63 lakh crore) do not account for:

▪️Economic growth
▪️Population growth
▪️Currency valuation changes
As a result, nominal totals can increase even if a country’s fiscal condition improves or stabilizes when measured as a percentage of GDP.

Conclusion
By citing raw debt numbers without context, the Congress post creates a distorted and inaccurate narrative. The omission of GDP-based comparisons makes the claim not just misleading, but fundamentally dishonest from an economic standpoint.
