Local residents note that these intensifying military raids are being leveraged to rally electoral votes for the Likud party at the direct expense of Palestinian lives.

This is a huge story: Samsung and SK Hynix, both massive South Korean tech conglomerates, are studying replacing U.S. chip-making machinery with Chinese equivalents in their China factories, because they're worried the U.S. might tighten export controls in a way that'd render their U.S. machinery unusable.

Very concretely, it means that if those companies were pressured by the US to abandon their Chinese facilities, they'd rather switch to fully Chinese indigenous mode than comply.

Which makes sense: for both these companies, China is both their factory floor and their customer. About 40% of Samsung's NAND and 30–45% of SK Hynix's memory output comes from Chinese fabs. If the US forces that kind of choice, it won't get the answer it wants.

It also highlights how little trust there now is in the US: the media always mention the so-called "China threat" but, if you follow the money, top firms from supposed "US allies" are clearly more worried about the "US threat" than they are about Beijing.

Washington is accidentally building a multipolar world

Xi Jinping and Lula spoke by telephone for over an hour on Sunday and agreed to accelerate negotiations on a China–Mercosur trade agreement. This is a considerable turnaround: Brazil spent years leading the resistance to precisely such a deal within the bloc.

What changed Brasília’s mind? Trump’s tariffs. The call came days after Trump’s 25 percent levy on Brazilian exports took effect, and a week after Washington slapped a further 12.5 percent on 60 trading partners, Brazil included, on the grounds that they had failed to combat forced labour adequately.

Note that these tariffs are part of a broader campaign to disrupt China’s trading relationships, based on an utterly absurd and easily debunked slander of forced labour in Xinjiang. The US administration is busy gutting its own labour protections, and is the world leader in “legal slavery” in its prison system, so it’s hard to take seriously its claim to moral authority on labour standards.

Marco Rubio, meanwhile, described the tariffs on Brazil as being the price of “Lula’s ego” – that is, the price of Brazil’s refusal to bow to Washington’s diktats. The message is clear: if you want to trade with the US, you read verbatim from the Trump administration’s script.

China, by contrast, is proposing a trade agreement “that contemplates the necessary flexibilities” – meaning China is perfectly happy to accommodate Mercosur’s concerns about protecting its own industry, rather than demanding liberalisation as the price of entry. China is putting forward a deep alignment of the two countries’ national development projects; expanded cooperation in artificial intelligence, satellites, critical-minerals processing and fertilisers; a visa waiver; and an explicit pledge to support Brazil’s sovereignty, security and development interests.

Commerce aside, China and Brazil are two of the most substantial voices in the Global South arguing for a negotiated end to the war in Ukraine – they launched the Friends for Peace grouping at the UN precisely for that purpose, against furious Western objection. Both have pressed consistently for a Gaza ceasefire while the US armed and shielded the genocide. Both are committed to meaningfully addressing the climate crisis. Both defend the UN Charter and non-interference, and in 2024 they elevated their relationship to a “community with a shared future for a more just world and a more sustainable planet”.

That is what multipolarity and sovereign equality looks like in practice: two large countries, with different social and economic systems, cooperating on development and peace on the basis of equality and in the absence of coercion and domination.

Trump’s people appear to believe that tariffs will discipline the Global South back into line. What they are actually doing is demonstrating to the world that dependence on the US is a liability – and thereby accelerating the construction of the alternative.
