friends, I give you a thread:
A Short History of #ADHD
*for anyone who thinks it's a New Thing caused by phone screens, high fructose corn syrup, or bad parenting*
Friends! I need your help with a project.
The number one thing people message me asking (on instagram) is for a list of resources pertaining to Autism. And, spoiler alert: I’m never prepared and always scramble.
So, I’ve decided to make one.
#ActuallyAutistic#Neurodivergent
@neuroqueery I am a autistic medical student who was unfairly excluded from my medical degree. My university has failed to asses my fitness to study or practise, I am raising funds to pay for my legal representation Please donate or retweet.

Takeaways here: self dx ppl are self-medicating more with alcohol to aide socialization. There could also be a link between masking ability here too - self dx people are more likely to be better at masking and evade diagnosis, and alcohol could play a part in that. /7
Hello and WELCOME to another episode of research validates my autistic life experience. Today's study explains my many years of alcoholism!

Being neurotypical is considered the default in society, so much that many autistic people don’t even consider the possibility that they’re autistic until late in life.
People might know they’re different, but at the same time assume that everyone struggles the way they do.
also totally understand if your response is ~FUCK YOU~ but mine is "please pull up a chair while I challenge everything you thought you knew about this topic that I study obsessively"
family member: why can't we cure autism already?
me: um..because that's eugenics? also, I'm autistic.
family member clearly confused because I don't "look autistic": oh. um..wait. what is autism then?
~TEACHING MOMENT ENGAGED~
It’s a very common misconception that autistic people lack a sense of humor.
While we can have trouble understanding sarcasm sometimes, more often than not, we’re very keen on making jokes ourselves.
Those of us who are nonspeaking find ways to joke around, too.
@Finnattentive another one for me is the inability to directly answer a yes or no question. there is always at least one necessary follow-up question before I have enough information to answer and usually my answer is still "depends". why does everyone think the world is so simple and binary 😅
@epski autistic/adhd here + can confirm the meds do not work the same for me. Im super sensitive to them, get irritable, more easily overwhelmed. have tried adderall, concerta, and vyvanse! 🤷 rn I take the tiniest dose of adderall possible a few days a week but I mostly hate it 🙃
@elisekumar your body can't absorb water that fast so you will just pee it out. also it can be dangerous to drink that much water in that short of a time frame, water intoxication is a thing!
