My son’s teacher once told me boys have to be “run like puppies.” If you have a garden, a tree house to build, a motorcycle to fix, or a deer to hunt, boys are fine. It’s often the cage that creates the misbehavior.

When I worked in a Montessori school, we had boys who couldn’t sit still. Rather than handcuffing them for drawing a paper gun, we sent them out to dig holes in the school garden. They would come back sweaty and smiling and perfectly able to focus.

When I was a kid, my mom said she wanted a Christmas village for Christmas—the little houses.

That year her parents, my step dad’s parents, and we kids each got her a church to start her village collection.

So with 3 churches, we named them the Lutheran church, the Catholic Church, and the Baptist church. The next year we got a little coffee shop for the village for all the pastors/priest to sit and discuss theology together.

There's a half of the Icarus myth no one tells.

Daedalus gave his son Icarus two warnings:
1. Don't fly too close to the sun; the wax will melt.
2. Don't fly too close to the sea; the sea spray will weigh down the feathers.

Everyone remembers the first. Hubris. Overreach. We tell that story all the time.

The second warning has been completely forgotten. And I think it's the one we actually need.

When I look at students now, I don't see kids flying too close to the sun.

I see kids being held too close to the sea. An education system that doesn't challenge them. That keeps them low, keeps them comfortable, keeps them "safe". And slowly, without anyone noticing, the weight builds on their wings.

The sea doesn't burn. That's what makes it so dangerous.

I met a new woman at church today and invited her to sit next to me. She spoke broken English and had just moved to our neighborhood from up north.

After the service she pointed to the big stack of Christmas Child boxes and said, “Where are you sending those?” I said they go all over the world. It’s a way for our people to love children everywhere.

She said, “I got one of those boxes once.” She grew up in Mexico.

“We were Catholic but not Christians. One of my relatives took me to a church that had the boxes. We all sat down in a big field and they handed them out to us.”

That’s incredible. Do you remember what was in it?

“I got a T-shirt and pens for coloring. I was very excited.”

She was then swallowed up by our Spanish-speaking members, so I didn’t hear the end of the story. But it was a little glimpse of the global church coming full circle.
