*Punjab Government Adopts PFVA Recommendations, Allocates Rs. 1.5 Billion for Citrus Industry Revival*

The Punjab government has announced a transformative investment of Rs. 1.5 billion to modernize and revitalize the citrus industry, Pakistan's leading horticultural export.

This groundbreaking initiative stems from detailed recommendations made by the Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association (PFVA), whose efforts have brought much-needed attention to the challenges facing the citrus sector, including climate change and outdated farming practices.

Key elements of the Citrus Industry Transformation Project include the establishment of disease-free citrus nurseries with a capacity of producing one million plants annually, importing new citrus varieties to diversify the industry, and creating high-density demonstration orchards equipped with modern irrigation systems.

Mobile soil and water testing units will also be introduced, while large tracts of land will be leased to investors for setting up state-of-the-art orchards.

PFVA's roadmap highlights the urgent need to address climate change impacts by introducing modern farming practices and resilient citrus varieties. Waheed Ahmed, Patron-in-Chief of PFVA, emphasized, "The citrus industry is Pakistan's number one horticulture export, but climate change and outdated varieties are putting it at risk. PFVA's recommendations have laid the foundation for this transformative initiative by the Punjab government."

The project also includes the establishment of certified private service providers for specialized orchard services and the development of a Citrus Quality Leadership Program.

This program will incentivize farmers to produce export-grade fruit while enhancing Pakistan's competitiveness in international markets.

A modern pesticide residue testing laboratory, in collaboration with international partners, will ensure compliance with global standards, while a comprehensive international market research study will explore trends and opportunities for Pakistan's citrus exports.

A PFVA delegation, led by Waheed Ahmed, is set to meet Punjab's Provincial Minister for Agriculture and Secretary Agriculture today to discuss the project's implementation. "This investment reflects the Punjab government's commitment to safeguarding our citrus industry's future and mitigating the effects of climate change on this vital sector," Ahmed added.

This initiative is expected to not only revive the citrus sector but also strengthen Pakistan’s position in the global horticulture export market, ensuring long-term economic and environmental sustainability. #kinnow #citrus #Punjab @CMpunjabMNS @GovtofPunjabPK @agri_department

*کینو کی صنعت بحران کا شکار ایکسپورٹ میں 50فیصد کمی کا خدشہ *

کینو کے معیار کے مسائل کیو جہ سے پاکستان سے کینو کی 22کروڑ ڈالر کی ایکسپورٹ خطرے میں پڑگئی، پانچ ماہ کا سیزن ڈیڑھ ماہ تک محدود رہا، پچاس فیصد پراسیسنگ فیکٹریاں بند ہوگئیں، ایکسپورٹ آرڈرز میں نمایاں کمی کا سامنا، کینو کی صنعت سے وابستہ چار لاکھ افراد کا روزگار اور کینو پراسیسنگ فیکٹریوں میں کی گئی 300ارب روپے کی سرمایہ کاری پر بھی سوالیہ نشان لگ گیا۔

پاکستان فروٹ اینڈ ویجیٹیبل ایکسپورٹرز ایسوسی ایشن کے سرپرست اعلیٰ وحید احمد نے پاکستان سے کینو کی ایکسپورٹ کی صورتحال پر تشویش کا اظہار کرتے ہوئے حکومتی سطح پر کینو کی صنعت کے تحفظ اور بحالی کے لیے ہنگامی اقدامات کا مطالبہ کیا ہے۔

پاکستان چند سال قبل تک ساڑھے چار لاکھ ٹن کینو کی ایکسپورٹ سے 22کروڑ ڈالر کا زرمبادلہ حاصل کررہا تھا تاہم اس سال یہ حجم ڈیڑھ سے پونے دو لاکھ ٹن تک محدود رہنے کا امکان ہے جس سے بمشکل 10کروڑ ڈالر کا زرمبادلہ حاصل ہوگا۔

پاکستان میں وسطی پنجاب کے علاقے سرگودھا اور بھلوال اپنے خوش ذائقہ اور رسیلے ترش پھل کینو کی پیداوار کے لیے دنیا بھر میں مشہور ہیں۔ وسیع رقبے پر پھیلے ہوئے کینو کے باغات اس علاقے کی معیشت کے لیے ریڑھ کی ہڈی کی حیثیت رکھتے ہیں جہاں کینو کی فارمنگ سے لے کر پراسیسنگ اور پیکنگ تک کے مراحل سے 4لاکھ افراد کا روزگار وابستہ ہے اور 200کے لگ بھگ ایکسپورٹ فیکٹریوں میں 300ارب روپے کی سرمایہ کاری کی گئی ہے۔

پاکستان میں کینو کی موجودہ ورائٹی 60سال قبل متعارف کرائی گئی اور وقت کے لحاظ سے یہ ورائٹی بیماریوں کے خلاف اپنی قدرتی مزاحمت کھو بیٹھی، موسمیاتی تبدیلیوں کے اثرات نے کینو کی ورائٹی کو مزید کمزور کردیا جس کا نتیجہ پیداوار میں نمایاں کمی بالخصوص معیار کی خرابی کی شکل میں نکل رہا ہے۔

پاکستان فروٹ اینڈ ویجیٹبل ایکسپورٹرز ایسوسی ایشن گزشتہ چھ سال سے پنجاب حکومت اور وفاقی وزارت نیشنل فوڈ سیکیوریٹی اور متعلقہ زرعی تحقیق کے اداروں کی توجہ کینو کی پیداوار کو لاحق ان خدشات سے آگاہ کرتی رہی ہے تاہم حکومتی توجہ نہ ملنے کی وجہ سے اب کروڑوں ڈالر کا زرمبادلہ کماکر دینے والی یہ صنعت تباہی کے دہانے پر پہنچ چکی ہے اور آئندہ دو سال میں پاکستان سے کینو کی ایکسپورٹ مکمل طور پر بند ہونے کا خدشہ ہے۔

پاکستان فروٹ اینڈ ویجیٹبل ایکسپورٹرز ایسوسی ایشن کے سرپرست اعلیٰ وحید احمد کے مطابق کینو کی موجودہ ورائٹی اپنی عمر کافی عرصہ پہلے پوری کرچکی ہے اور نئی ورائٹیز تیار نہ کیے جانے کی بناء پر پاکستان کے پاس ترش پھلوں کی ایکسپورٹ میں اپنا مقام برقرار رکھنے کے لیے کوئی راستہ نہیں بچا۔

وحید احمد نے کہا کہ پی ایف وی اے کئی سال سے پنجاب اور وفاقی حکومت کو آگاہ کرتی رہی ہے کہ کینو کی نئی ورائٹیز متعارف نہ کرائی گئیں تو انڈسٹری ختم ہوجائیگی، لاکھوں لوگوں کا روزگار اور کروڑوں روپے کا زرمبادلہ بھی
خطرے میں پڑ جائے گا۔

وحید احمد نے کہا کہ اب صورتحال یہ ہے کہ سیزن کے آغاز پر ہی 200میں سے نصف کے لگ بھگ کینو پراسیسنگ فیکٹریاں بند پڑی ہیں۔ اس سال کینو کی ایکسپورٹ ڈیڑھ سے پونے دو لاکھ ٹن تک محدود رہنے کا امکان ہے جس سے بمشکل 10کروڑ ڈالر کا زرمبادلہ حاصل ہوگا۔

انہوں نے کہا کہ عموماً کسی بھی پھل کی ورائٹی پچیس سال میں اپنی عمر پوری کرلیتی ہے جس کے بعد اس ورائٹی کی جدید قسم متعارف کرانا پڑتی ہے۔ پاکستان میں کینو کی ورائٹی 60سال قبل متعارف کرائی گئی اور اس کی عمر پوری ہونے کے باوجود نئی ورائیٹیز پر توجہ نہیں دی گئی۔

کینو کے باغات بیماریوں کا گڑھ بن چکے ہیں، کینو کی ظاہری شکل بھی خراب ہوچکی ہے جس کی جلد پر داغ دھبوں کیو جہ سے ایکسپورٹ کے قابل نہیں دوسری جانب کینو کی شیلف لائف بھی کم ہوچکی ہے یہی وجہ ہے کہ گزشتہ کئی سال سے ایکسپورٹ کی کنسائمنٹس مسترد ہورہی ہیں اور بڑی مقدار میں کینو خراب حالت میں ایکسپورٹ مارکیٹ تک پہنچ رہا ہے جس سے ایکسپورٹرز اور امپورٹرز دونوں کو بھاری نقصانات کا سامنا ہے۔

وحید احمد نے کہا کہ اب فوری طو رپر ترش پھلون کی نئی ورائٹیز پر کام کرنے کی ضرورت ہے جن میں ارلی، مڈل اور لیٹ ورائٹیز شامل ہیں۔ مینڈرین (کینو) کے ساتھ لیمن اور اورنج کی نئی ورائٹیز کو آج متعارف کرایا جائے تو پیداوار حاصل ہونے میں پانچ سال لگیں گے اور روایتی علاقوں سے ہٹ کر ترش پھلوں کے فارم لگانا پڑیں گے تاکہ انہیں موجودہ علاقوں میں پھیلی ترش پھلوں کی بیماریوں سے بچایا جاسکے۔ 1/2
