You are one of us now.

It’s great pressure and stress- the world we’re responsible for in the healing arts.

It’s simultaneously a great honor.

My advice?

1. Listen closely to our patients. Hear them- they’ll tell you what you need to know.

2. Ask for help. NEVER worry alone.

3. Above all, remember your “why” for choosing this difficult route- it is worth it no matter the cynicism that you may find yourself surrounded by in the years ahead.

All of your attendings vividly remember our first day, too.

In the ICU this week, we had a graduation ceremony for a child of a patient whose wish was to be at all of her children’s HS graduations. Her wish came true prior to being terminally weaned. A moment I will never forget. Medicine is beautiful and heartbreaking.
