Kids who grew up seeing Walter Ritte or Haunani K Trask blasted as radical heathens by the media - are adults now. We own marketing firms, news outlets, schools. It makes no difference if you televise our revolution. It’s here - we’re not stopping. @puuhuluhulu
Americans: understand that the incredible, prolonged suffering we’re about to endure is a tiny fraction of the pain we’ve inflicted upon hundreds of millions of people via economic sanctions in countries like Iran for over half a century. The chickens are coming home to roost.
Trump’s disastrous war on Iran didn’t come out of nowhere. Here’s a primer on what US Empire did to get us to this point:
🔻In 1953 the CIA collaborated with British intelligence in Operation Ajax to overthrow Iranian PM Mohammad Mossadegh for daring to nationalize Iran’s oil industry.
🔻In 1979, Pres. Carter responded to Iran’s Islamic Revolution - which secured sovereignty over their petroleum sector - by introducing unilateral sanctions against Iran, freezing $12 billion in Central Bank of Iran assets held in US banks, and barring oil imports.
🔻Pres. Reagan dramatically expanded those unilateral sanctions in 1987, prohibiting import of nearly all Iranian goods and services. One year later, the US Navy’s USS Vincennes shot down Iran Air Flight 655 over the Persian Gulf, killing all 290 people on board.
🔻In 1989, Pres. H.W. Bush signed National Security Directive 26, an updated Persian Gulf policy asserting Iran posed the greatest threat to U.S. interests in the region. In 1991, the US cosponsored the Madrid Peace Conference, an attempt to negotiate towards regional normalization with the genocidal settler colony of Israel. This pressured Iran to increase support for anti-colonial allies in the region like Hamas, PIJ, and Hezbollah. That same year, then US ambassador to the UN Madeleine Albright led the charge to pass UNSCR 661: a full trade embargo against Iraq that killed half a million Iraqi children, a measure she would later say was “worth it”. This policy of genocide by sanction helped set the precedent for American imperialist economic strangulation of Iran.
🔻 In 1995 Pres. Clinton issued Executive Orders 12957 and 12959, banning U.S. investment in Iran’s energy sector and prohibiting all US trade with Iran. In 1996 Clinton signed ILSA (Iran and Libya Sanctions Act) into law, targeting any American or foreign company investing heavily in the development of Iran’s oil industry by threatening to cut off access to any US institutions and financial instruments, an Act extended under successive Presidents.
🔻 In 2001-2003 Pres. G.W. Bush invaded Afghanistan and Iraq and killed over four million people, catastrophically destabilizing Iran’s direct Eastern and Western neighbors. In Bush’s 2002 State of the Union speech, he referred to Iran as a member of an “Axis of Evil”, further painting a target on a country of 90 million people and intensifying the racist vilification of Iranians. The US government expanded sanctions on Iran’s banks in 2006, prohibiting even indirect dealings with US financial institutions.
🔻In 2010, Pres. Obama signed the CISADA bill into law, which expanded ILSA sanctions to punish businesses dealing with Iran’s petroleum sector. Via multiple executive orders, Obama instituted “maximum pressure” sanctions against Iran via Executive Orders that exposed anyone making trades in the rial to sanction. This decimated Iran’s economy in a way they’re still recovering from.
🔻The rest you probably know. In his first term, Trump withdrew from the Iran Nuclear Deal (JCPOA), expanded sanctions, and assassinated Qasem Soleimani. Biden slapped even more sanctions on Iran and then committed a genocide in Gaza. The Holocaust of Palestinians remains a primary motivator behind Iran’s military actions.
Now here we are in the present day, with Trump once again at the helm. Yes, he committed a series of remarkably stupid mistakes and unspeakable atrocities. But every US President - and every policy of genocidal siege and colonial violence across every US administration before him - set the stage for Trump to do what he’s doing now. So yes, this has everything to do with American empire. Trump is just a symptom of the disease.
This is our aquifer. The Halawa Shaft, up until Dec. 2021, provided 20% of Honolulu’s water. The Board of Water Supply announced that due to the Navy contaminating our water with fuel from their leaking Red Hill tanks, we may never be able to draw from this shaft again. Ever.
Bird nests made from anti-bird spikes! 🤯 Even for me as a nest researcher, these are the craziest bird nests I've ever seen. Today my paper came out on this rebellious behaviour. And it's like telling a joke...
A thread. 🧵

Dear @NSF, I do not consent to the @TMTHawaii being built on Mauna Kea. I’m not sure how many different ways my community and I can tell the world this but I really need you to understand that we said no and we mean it. Please stop now. #protectmaunakea

It has been a delight to play a role in @MTV’s #AANHPI Heritage Month campaign and to have @nicoleforever & @chriskahunahana showcase their voices in “Hawaiians, unite”. Congrats to both these filmmakers. Also, be sure to check out their film WAIKIKI when it comes out!
