The decision of the National Green Tribunal giving its approval to the Great Nicobar project is deeply disappointing. There is clear evidence that the project will have disastrous ecological impacts. The conditions for its clearance, that the NGT draws reference to, will do little to deal with these long-term consequences. The matter is, however, still under argument in the Calcutta High Court that now is the only beacon of hope.

In the passing of Dr. Madhav Gadgil, India has lost one of its foremost voices in ecological inquiry. His leadership helped turn scientific evidence into protective action, most notably through decisive engagement with landmark conservation efforts and community rights, particulaly in the Western Ghats.

A receiptient of the Padma Bhushan, the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, and Karnataka’s Rajyotsava Prashasthi, he leaves behind an enduring imprint on research, teaching, and ecological conservation, and his departure is a major setback for the country’s green cause.

My deepest condolences to his family, friends and the scientific community.

SIR के नाम पर देश भर में अफ़रा-तफ़री मचा रखी है - नतीजा? तीन हफ्तों में 16 BLO की जान चली गई। हार्ट अटैक, तनाव, आत्महत्या - SIR कोई सुधार नहीं, थोपा गया ज़ुल्म है।

ECI ने ऐसा सिस्टम बनाया है जिसमें नागरिकों को खुद को तलाशने के लिए 22 साल पुरानी मतदाता सूची के हज़ारों स्कैन पन्ने पलटने पड़ें। मक़सद साफ़ है - सही मतदाता थककर हार जाए, और vote chori बिना रोक-टोक जारी रहे।

भारत दुनिया के लिए अत्याधुनिक सॉफ्टवेयर बनाता है, मगर भारत का चुनाव आयोग आज भी काग़ज़ों का जंगल खड़ा करने पर ही अड़ा है।

अगर नीयत साफ़ होती तो लिस्ट डिजिटल, सर्चेबल और मशीन-रीडेबल होती - और ECI 30 दिन की हड़बड़ी में अंधाधुंध काम ठेलने के बजाय उचित समय ले कर पारदर्शिता और जवाबदेही पर ध्यान देता।

SIR एक सोची-समझी चाल है - जहां नागरिकों को परेशान किया जा रहा है और BLOs की अनावश्यक दबाव से मौतों को “कॉलैटरल डैमेज” मान कर अनदेखा कर दिया है।

यह नाकामी नहीं, षड़यंत्र है - सत्ता की रक्षा में लोकतंत्र की बलि है।

Mohan Hirabhai Hiralal has just passed away. He was a staunch Gandhian who was inspired by Vinoba Bhave and Jayaprakash Narayan. For four decades he worked tirelessly in Gadchiroli and Chandrapur districts of Maharashtra. His dedication paved the way for Menda Lekha to become the first gram sabha in the country on April 27, 2011 to get full control over all aspects of bamboo trade - including harvesting and selling - as part of the Community Forest Rights under the Forest Rights Act, 2006. This has transformed Menda Lekha.

In that function in which the-then CM of Maharashtra Prithviraj Chavan was also present, I still vividly recall Devaji Tofa, the local tribal leader and close associate
of Mohan Hirabhai, saying: दिल्ली मुंबई में हमारी सरकार, मेंडा लेखा में हम ही सरकार!

The example and success of Menda Lekha still awaits multiplication across the country.

अभी-अभी ख़बर मिली कि मोहन हीराबाई हीरालाल का निधन हो गया है। वह पक्के गांधीवादी थे जो विनोबा भावे और जयप्रकाश नारायण से प्रेरित थे। चार दशकों तक महाराष्ट्र के गढ़चिरौली ज़िले में वह बिना थके लगातार मेहनत करते रहे। उनके समर्पण ने 27 अप्रैल, 2011 को वन अधिकार अधिनियम, 2006 के तहत बांस व्यापार के सभी पहलुओं पर पूर्ण नियंत्रण पाने के लिए मेंढा लेखा को देश की पहली ग्राम सभा बनने का मार्ग प्रशस्त किया। इससे मेंढा लेखा पूरी तरह से बदल गया है।

उस समारोह, जिसमें महाराष्ट्र के तत्कालीन मुख्यमंत्री पृथ्वीराज चव्हाण भी उपस्थित थे, में मौजूद स्थानीय आदिवासी नेता और मोहन हीराभाई के सहयोगी देवाजी तोफा की अभी भी मुझे याद आती है, जो कहते हैं: दिल्ली मुंबई में हमारी सरकार, मेंढा लेखा में हम ही सरकार।

मेंढा लेखा का उदाहरण और उसकी सफलता अभी भी देश भर में फैलने के इंतजार में है।

मोहन हीराबाई हीरालाल के नाम को लेकर एक विशेष बैकग्राउंड है: अपने लिए मिले नाम में उन्होंने अपने माता और पिता के नाम को भी शामिल करने का फैसला किया था।
