Yes, sociopolitical factors explain worsening youth mental health, but so too does the ever growing prevalence of demoralising & pessimistic pathologising narratives that reframe their social suffering as pointing to something disordered within them.
At root, what I dislike most about psychiatry is this: you have a person (the psychiatrist) who comes along and, in effect, says to another (the patient): “my grasp of reality is superior to yours.” No justification, no explanation. As a philosopher, I find this intolerable.
Presented a paper at the Global South Critical Psychology Conference '23 today 👩
GSCPC being a critical psychology platform, it was all the more special as my first conference talk!!!
@CriticalPsyHub @ArdenUniPsych
@niranjanar_ & my paper was on 'Representation of Dalit & Tribal communities in Psychological Autopsies of Suicide in India: A Systematic Scoping Review', and i can't thank @Kirsten_Russell and @N_Peddie enough for their guidance in this independent endeavor of ours :D
Can Twitter help me find communities or initiatives aiming to provide mentorship to women in STEM?

The work I am doing on identity performance in India has taken a life of its own where @raagalika@niranjanar_@pratul1508 and #akshaj are applying this stuff to their local contexts. I am now standing back and marvelling at what they have created.
I attended my first every academic conference & presented the amazing work that @niranjanar_@pratul1508@akshaj and I did under the mentorship of @PoorviIyer at #SPSP2023!!
To receive so much love and recognition for your work as a first gen undergrad felt absolutely surreal!
SO PROUD of my tribe @raagalika@niranjanar_@pratul1508 and #Akshaj for their acceptance to present at #SPSP2023. This is the first (of many) milestones for The Performance Project and I cannot wait for the excellent piece of research that this team will produce.
As I excitedly (nervously) ready my own PhD paper for publication, it is great to see that some of what is being proposed is already being applied and put to the test. And securing KEI funding for further research and exchange is the absolute icing. We are just getting started 💪🏾
And their current project that will look at how and why south Indian students (who are a minority group on predominantly north Indian college campus) suppress or express their South Indian-ness in these campuses will crucially build upon social psych theories and my PhD research
Brilliant members of #ThePerformanceProject like @raagalika and @niranjanar_ have taken (and are taking) these ideas and apply them to their local contexts. Their creativity, passion and work ethic never fails to amaze me!
