Photographed in colour 115 years ago, this truly astounding autochrome plate is like a Rembrandt painting, with a mastful understanding of light & shade. It depicts a pawnbroker evaluating jewellery, and was photographed by Dr W. Simon in 1910. It is original colour, not colourised.

Travel back 116 years to a resplendant picnic at Yalta on the Crimean Peninsula. I have cleaned-up this 1910 autochrome by Peter Ivanovich Vedenisov. The people in the picture are recorded as Tania, Natasha, Kolia & Liza Kozakov, with Vera Vedenisov & Elena Bazilev. It is an early colour glass plate process and not colourised.

Marie Curie, the scientist who discovered radium, left behind notebooks that are still emitting radiation and will remain hazardous for another 1,500 years.

Curie (1867–1934) conducted pioneering research on radioactivity, isolating radium and polonium in 1898. At the time, the dangers of prolonged radiation exposure were not fully understood, and she handled radioactive materials without modern protective equipment. As a result, her laboratory notes, personal papers, and even some of her belongings became contaminated.

Today, her notebooks are stored in lead-lined boxes at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Researchers who wish to consult them must wear protective clothing and sign liability waivers due to the ongoing radiation risk.

The long-term hazard is largely due to radium-226, which has a half-life of about 1,600 years, meaning it decays very slowly.

Marie Curie was the first person to win two Nobel Prizes in different scientific fields—Physics (1903) and Chemistry (1911).
